Help! Noise!

Started up my 98 with 11900 miles today (snow's gone). It started and ran great. Went for a short ride and after about 10 miles when I came to a stop sign it seemed to have a much louder valve noise. I imediatly stopped and checked oil etc. Rode it home. You can only hear it at idle. I'm worried, any ideas?

Hmmm... how strange, a vtr1000 with cam trouble.

Yes, take it from someone who has had CCT trouble in the past. Don't turn on your bike anymore until you or a mechanic has inspected the CCTs. If you can't do it yourself, have the bike TOWED (for god's sake, don't ride it).

That should only run you 1/2 hours time at most = ~$30.

Better than $500 to have bent valves replaced by a mech.

Good luck.

Re: Help! Noise!

My mechanic says that the camchain tensioner sometimes sticks after the bike is stored for months sometimes. Don't worry! I decided to go out and start it today and everything sounds normal. I'm not used to having any worries with Honda as I have had an 82 750F and it still runs great! Should I be worried??????????

These bikes are notorious for cam chain tensioner problems.

End result is a disaster when they fail. I would replace them at any sign of malfunction, which in my opinion you have just had.

Do yourself a favor. Buy the aftermarket APE CCTs.

We should seriously look into a group discount as much CCTs as we are buying.

Count me in on the group buy. 22k Miles and a 5000 mile trip planed in Aug. I think it is time to replace before I get stuck in NV somewhere 100 miles from the closest gas station.

Look at my ad for springs in Mods section, cheaper alternative to buying complete new units and easy to fit, cost effective. change them within your servicing schedules, keep some spares, buy a bunch of them with your friends. They are easy to change if you have an old CCT spend a bit of time stripping it down, note how it works then give us a shout. also they are listed on ebay.co.uk item number 8056388470 pay pal okay. Spings are fitted at our own consent, like everything else we care to bolt on.
