Help... Central Wisconsin or Chicago

Is there anyone on this forum that lives near central Wisconsin? I wouldn't mind getting some help with manual CCTs and carb cleaning/tuning/syncing if at all possible. Chicago is also an alternative. I travel down that way once a month. I'm not asking for free labor either... unless you're offering! haha As far as the carb syncing goes I'm in the process of getting a Twinmax tool for that. I haven't ever tuned carbs and my knowledge on ripping them apart is a single carb 250cc dirt bike.
Thanks,
Rob

As my 'handle' implies, I'm in Skokie, IL just north of Chicago & west of Evanston. I'm an old SH member and very familiar with the SH, including the carbs and have both mercury stick & the Twin Max sync devices and installed the APE manual CCTs many years ago. I have a heated & air conditioned, carpeted MC shop with a Handy Lift & refrigerator (for U know what), and work "cheap" LOL. Depending on how many miles you have on your VTR, checking the valve lash & adjusting (shims required) is recommended while installing the CCTs, and calibrating the TPS along with the carb work. If your SH is operable, you can ride it down but if U have to leave it (probably would do the carbs in one visit & CCT in a second, or visa-versa), you'll need transport home or stay at a local motel unless U trailer it. The main thing if you need valve shims is whether the one relatively nearby Honda shop has them in stock (doubtful) but both Yamaha & other marques actually use the same diameter shims. If you want to buy an after-market complete set of shims, they're not that expensive & I may take the set in trade from some of my labor time.

Looks like you got yourself someone to give ya a hand in a nice carpeted shop. If it doesn't work out, I'm right off 94, just outside Milwaukee.

Thanks both of you guys for the quick responses! I will PM both of you for contact info!

Hey guys can I get in on the offer as well? I'm in Round Lake Beach IL, North burbs.
I just want to get a sanity check from another Superhawk owner that has a little more experience than me to make sure I have things right. She runs good so far no issues that I know of. Just looking for a quick check and maybe get some tips on maintenance and such.
I did the manual cct's, jetted carbs, sync and tune up.

PM me, we'll set up a check-out ride to SE WI & can talk at lunch.

Not sure about this coming weekend, as work is brutal & so will be the temps.

autoteach 07-13-2011 09:27 PM

lets just have a WI/ IL get together already.

Salieb76 07-13-2011 09:38 PM

Absolutely!! I'm in. Agree with bad weekend. Major storm here in lake county and we were out of power for a few days. Got it back today and trying to get things back to norm. Let's pm and work somthin out for sure.

Kendrick 07-13-2011 10:30 PM

Rah, rah! Just chiming in for downtown Milwaukee. I'll go back to being quiet now. I wouldn't mind seeing another one though...

Although someone was down here for Jazz in the Park a few weeks ago, if you hang around here...

autoteach 07-13-2011 10:50 PM

Tomorrow is a cafe racer bike night at the Iron Horse. I will be there for that, the hawk will not.

Stumpy 07-14-2011 04:36 AM

i like how this thread turned into a WI/IL get together! haha we should all plan a ride sometime for sure!

sam 07-15-2011 10:15 PM

I live in Racine, used to live in Hales Corners, and grew up in Menomonee Falls, and work in Milwaukee, right off of Silver Spring and I43, if some people want to get together for a ride some time that would be great. Besides, once winter gets here i myself may need a little mechanical help with my 99' SH that I may not have the tools for. It never hurts to get to know the right people.

If I had a bigger garage, I'd host this deal, got all the tools and plenty of beer. Sounds like we need an annual Wisconsin tech day. Have to get a list together.

IWVTRR

= Illinois Wisconsin VTR Ride (or Rally)

I've been trying to get members to commit to at least one ride for years!

I thing we should tr to get together once a month during the "season".

Not this weekend though due to work & heat but maybe next. We can meet U Cheeseheads anywhere like in Burlington at Adrian's Frozen Custard or in Rochester at Chances (I like to ride-eat-ride as my tight leathers will attest to). I can round-up the NE IL guys and head north.

Let's do it soon!

BTW, was near the Iron Horse (Hotel) today when I visited the HD museum for the first time (I was caging it becuz I had to deliver SWMBO* & R3** to a Fesh at Pettit Nat'l Ice Center). Very good museum even though I'm not a Harleyite at all.

*SWMBO = She Who Must Be Obeyed
**R3 = Rodent 3 = human babies become rug rats hence rodentia, 3 being 3rd born

Skokie, you should have gone to Disco World*

*Discovery World

Damn Wisconsin VTR riders kick ass for helping each other out. I hope I can find someone in Georgia to help me out when I go to install my manual CCTs.

sam 07-16-2011 10:28 PM

Due to crazy work and school schedules, I hope everybody would be o.k. with an upcoming Sunday. Burlington also sounds good with me unless anybody has any other suggestions. I'm open to meeting where ever. It's just that my days free are limited to pretty much Sunday.

Did not get your reference to Discovery World.

Everyone including you should post dates they can wrangle free...

I'm working on it.

Kendrick 07-17-2011 06:09 PM

I can make pretty much any Saturday or Sunday work! But the closer to Milwaukee the better.

ruajohnson 07-17-2011 06:17 PM

I am still working on dates. Mid to late August might be my sweet spot.

autoteach 07-17-2011 07:32 PM

Skokie,
The BUILD bikes are at disco world.

AdamK 07-17-2011 07:58 PM

Im in Cary and Skokie i've been wanting to get together for a while. I would love to watch someone work on their bike while I do it on my own so I learn more about it. I have an empty 3 car with a stocked fridge and a big tool box. We caould start here and end somewhere else. :)
