Help buying a spare key
When looking up the key blank in Ron Ayers I come across a type 1 key and type 2. Anyone know the difference by chance?

I did not know either, so I went to this site, looked at the photos, and orderded from them. They are pretty good:

'01 and later VTRs take a different blank than '00 and earlier. I'd guess Type 2 is for the '01 and up, but I'd call and check before ordering.

I just went through this yesterday, I didn't realize that I needed a special key blank, I thought I could just go to the local hardware store and get one cut. That didn't work but they directed me to a specialty lock and key place and they carried a few spare honda blanks. They had a couple that worked and it cost me 9 bucks to get 2 spares cut. I was also told that Honda dealers will carry some spare blanks so that would be worth checking into if you are close to a dealer.

If you want a generic key as a back upfor your 98-00', use a Curtis -"HD75". Almost every key cutting place has the Curtis brand.

Yeah I just looked at the one key I have from the previous owner and it is one of the Curtis HD74's. The OCD side of me says it would be nice to have a real Honda key.. but my fiscal side says just get the cheap blank... lol. I think I will call about the two types though because I am way curious now.

I had an extra made up for my '02 - $3 at the local locksmith...

look at the link that I posted - it has to do with which side is raised, left or right.
