headlight ?
 

I've read all the info i can find about the SH's crappy lights, and the common fix for it... the relay, and wiring kits,
but here's my ? Got myself all geared up to just put together a DIY kit,
but when I actually tested the plug at the light found i am getting 13.8-13.9
volts at the plug?
it doesnt appear as any previous owner has changed anything, would i be safe to just try a better (higher output) bulb?, or is a relay kit really going to help givin that i am seeing a good voltage?

What voltage are you seeing at the battery at what rpm's? Are your R/R at spec or is it over specified voltage?

sorry about that, it is with the light unplugged, i never checked anything at the batt., or R/R, just on the headlight plug itself, with bike running.

Well... For the readings to be of any use you have to measure stuff when plugged in... That voltage is normal since there is no load... The voltage only drops if you try to cram to much into a too small wire... And that doesn't happen if you unplug the bulb... And that is about as simple as I can make that explanation...

So plug everythng back in... Measure the voltage at the battery with the bike running and the bulb lit, and then measure at the bulb and compare those voltages...

If they are the same, lucky you... If they are not... (Which I'm betting!) You have the same underdimensioned wiring as the rest of us...
