hi to all. please first excuse my English, i speak it very well but write it worse :-)

Im building a Buggy using an Honda Varadero (carb version) that has had an Honda VTR (carb version) Engine transplant.

The bike was chrashed ang given to me for free. As i had the buggy chssies laying around.. i decided to make something out of it,

I have fitted the Engine. and wireharness - but wont get the Engine to fire at all.

the key part of ignitionlock was smhed. so cut it off. but tere are only Three wires in it.

also wonderiing if ll years of the Varadero / VTR had a tipsensor as stock ? nd if swhere would this be on the bike as i cannot seem to find it,

there are 2-3 places on the wireloom that might be for the tipsensor. etc etc

also. i have no instrumentcluster as it also was smashed totally so i donot know where to which each of the front located vireconnectors go to except the one for the ignitionkey

help meŽplease. IŽll gladly post Pictures for you.

I have attached a copy of the wiring diagram, and there is no tip-over sensor on the VTR.

Cadbury64 - Many thanxs

if i posted som pics of the harness might you be able to help me further ?

KristiaŽn Hesselmark 04-19-2017 03:36 PM

thanxs som much. if i post some pics of the harness could you help me furhter ?

Happy to help if I can.

Here is a dropbox link to the service manual for the VTR:

8541Hawk - thank you

Cadbury64 - here are two more oictures as i asked about. 1st on is located rear of the bike, about 45-50cm from the CDI /Picture without numbers on it

2nd is just ahead of the front coil wires

Cadbury64 04-20-2017 12:20 PM

It's hard to tell from the photos but at a guess the rear one may be the brake light switch, and the other could be the fan motor connector.

It would be easier if you tell me how many pins in a connector, and the colour (main/stripe) of the wires.

Also please clarify, is the starter turning over but the engine is not sparking, or the starter is not working?

KristiaŽn Hesselmark 04-20-2017 12:51 PM

i just found out that the wireharnessess are not idetical on the Varadero / VTR - need to do som more checking / Pictures

as the Engines are the same i just thought the wires would be the same aswell.

8541Hawk 04-20-2017 08:13 PM

Also if you have a HISS system we really are not going to be much help as US bikes never equipped with it.

KristiaŽn Hesselmark 04-21-2017 09:40 AM

up and running :-) still need hep though with what wires are not in use.

KristiaŽn Hesselmark 04-22-2017 02:11 PM

Cadbury64: here are a few more questions :-)

I still need to locate on the harness which wireconnector is which . . .

1# Fan-motor wires
2# Fan-switch
3# Fuel level sender
4# Neutral switch / oil pressure switch (same connector ?)
5# Clutch switch
6# fuel cut-off relay
7# Fuelpump wires.. 2 or 3 wires ?

is the fuel cut-off relay necessary on a 4-wheel buggy ? does it act like an tip-sensor ?

:-) / Kristian

-------------

Headlight relayŽs.. 2 pcs. with each a 4-pin connector ? located just by the headlight bulb connectors ?

1# Fan-motor wires
2# Fan-switch: 1&2 are together, black 2P connector, black/blue and green wires. Black/blue is live to fan motor then to switch on radiator which completes ground circuit when hot.
3# Fuel level sender: low level sender is a 2p clear connector, brown/black and green/black wires.
4# Neutral switch / oil pressure switch (same connector ?)
5# Clutch switch: Black wires with right-angle boot/spade terminals on end, connect to both red and green connectors which also service the left switch pod (lights/horn/indicators)
6# fuel cut-off relay: Not on the VTR
7# Fuelpump wires.. 2 or 3 wires ? Not on the VTR; gravity feed only, no pump.

Bikes with fuel pumps use the relay to stop or start the pump. They also have a bank angle sensor to kill the engine in a fall.

VTR's don't have headlight relays. I think you must have the Varadero harness.

Go here to download a service manual for the Varadero. The wiring diagram is on page 20-3.

many thanxs for the great reply.

yess. i do have the Varadero 1000 wireharness. which i noticed is similar but no more than that to the VTRŽs.

The Varadero has a fuelpump, fuelpump cut-off relay etc.. i just need to find the suitable wires yto make a new low preassure fuelpump. get giong as the Engine cranks.

Cadbury64 04-25-2017 12:35 PM

Assuming your engine has carbs (some Varaderos use FI) then you only need a fuel pump if the fuel tank is lower than the carbs. The VTR does just fine with gravity feed.

xeris 04-25-2017 06:28 PM

I thought all Varaderos had FI?

Cadbury64 04-25-2017 09:03 PM

The service manual I downloaded (XL1000V) shows 42mm CV carbs. But you are correct that some later Varaderos use FI.

I have the wireharness from an -99 swedishreg carbŽd Varadero, but the Engine off an 1998 VTR with carbs. :D

So i have had the Engine running without the thermostat fitted to allow maximum waterflow to check for possible leaks . Im using an FZr1000 -89 radiator up front, which seems to work well. will fit an BMW kl1200 fan also, but will make the fan start with the fuelpump.

also done the entire exhaust-system & fitted exhaustwrap.

ItŽs LOUD :-)

You might want to rethink the no thermostat.

i run all my Three bikes without.. but on the buggy its only atm for checking for leaks.

is the VTR sensitive for that running without the themostat ?

Cadbury64 04-28-2017 03:26 PM

If you have no thermostat then the engine will be slower to come to operating temperature (about 80C), and may never get that warm if you are running steadily in cold air. On a buggy at low speed and in short bursts, that may not matter, but you would run the risk of moisture accumulating in the oil as it was not getting hot enough to evaporate.
