Gauge conversion/swap

I have a 98 superhawk and I am looking at converting my gauges to the more feature rich 01-05 gauge cluster. I know I am also going to have to change the wiring harness as well. Does anyone on here know if the 01-05 wiring harness will direct plug and play with the 97-00 Superhawk? Also has anyone one done this conversion? any tips or issues?

I dont think its plug n play but it will work if you splice the wires. Do a search for threads since there are a few on this. I did a cbr600rr swap which is a way big step up.

Smokinjoe73 I saw your conversion with the cbr600rr gauge cluster. I really like that. How difficult was the swap? What did you do in terms of wiring harness? I know cut and splice was involved but can you give me specifics. I am actually really interested in possibly doing that conversion. As far as difficulty I can handle that. I'm a mechanic by trade and I did time in a custom hotrod and fab shop.

Its good you have confidence because it was HARD. I was really determined but would not recommend it to the faint of heart.

I had to change the temp sensor (not fan switch) and graft a cbr float unit into the vtr tank. (they are nothing alike).

I have done a ton of plastic welding on bodywork and givi cases so was able to do it. I guess you could also build it from metal but I wanted to stick with stock material. I got the connectors from corsa technic so I can just plug the stocker back in.

You can email me if you want at englatona(at)netero(dot)net. But I am leaving tomorrow for a race wknd in New Hampshire til sun.

Thanks for the email address. I probably won't be looking at doing this til september octoberish. But I will contact you if I move forward with it. Thanks again.

I'm actually in the process of doing this same swap to the later gauge cluster. I got a complete wire harness that I plan to swap out but I haven't gone through and checked all the connectors yet. I'm hoping they are all the same. I'm sure I'll be posting on here when I get it done and let you know if it worked or if I had to swap out connectors on the harness.

Thanks GTS that would be awesome. please keep me updated on your progress.

If you are doing a straight swap new generation gauges on the older generation bike/harness, there is already an extensive write-up posted... Just read and follow...

And, no... I won't post a link, I'm too lazy, search is your friend...

Its not too difficult to do... you need the fuel level sender and coolant temp sender (single wire smaller sensor in the stat housing) and i suggest a newer tank as the fuel level wont be accurate because the float hits a vent tube... i personally like the older ones better after riding with both... the harnesses are the same minus the plugs fot the cluster

Sweet! Maniac that's exactly the answer I was looking for much thanks.

I forgot the side stand switch connector is different as well 98-01has 3 wires 01-05 has 2... if you search or use a wireng diagram youll figure out how to make this work...

Blacksunshyn 08-10-2012 08:08 PM

Thanks again maniac. I actually ordered a 98-05 shop manual so it should have both wiring schematics in it.

It does... its downloadable on here somewhere as well...
