Fuel Quality
Hey again fellas,
I couldn't find any threads that specifically address this particular issue, so here it goes. I was talking to my motorcycle mechanic today, and I asked him what kind of gas he uses. He said "Anything but Arco, Thrifty, and any other Surplus fuel seller. And always use 91 or better.". I just read a GREAT article about that here: https://www.superhawkforum.com/forum...hlight=bicycle So with the octane issue out of the way, does brand really matter? I realize that brands will vary state to state, but I'm sure you get the point of this post. My mechanic also said that Chevron (or Mobil can't remember which one he recommends) is the best fuel. I'm the type that has brand loyatly and fill up with either Shell or 76. What do you guys use? KG |
All of it is overpriced. That's all i know.

Oh quit whining... What is the price now? a third of ours? or less?!
Edit: I checked... you are actually up to 2.8$ or so now so you are actually above our all time lowest price... But you still have a way to go to hit our current at around 3.5$ |
Doesn't Sweden want to have an oil free economy? Get to work on that solar power Hawk mod.
|
Meh... I'm burning fuel like there is no tomorrow...:)
Don't worry...:) |
Average price near me is $3.29 for 87 octane - $2.89 at the Indian reservation 30 miles away.
I usually run 91 octane from major retailers like Sunoco, Mobil, etc

Visit the Top Tier fuel website and check out the brands that meet their higher standards. It's updated as more refiners voluntarily meet these stiffer levels of quality.

Why 91? Honda specs out 87 for the SH and in fact mine runs and idles better on 87
|
I was about to say, when I first got my 'hawk (already broken in), I was on the whole 'always use 91' bandwagon. Then I thought what the hell, tried 87, and she actually seemed to like it more, giving me approx. 44 mpg vice 38-41.
This was all with major brand gasoline ie Shell, 76, Texaco, Mobil, etc. I might have gone "down" to regular unleaded, but I'm not willing to experiment with the ethanol mixture Arco and other cheap-o gas stations use. Besides, with a 4 gallon fillup, is the few extra pennies that big of a deal? |
I used 89 the whole time...that was the magic number for my girl...
|
When I was down in VA I would use Amoco 93 exclusively and never had problems. Now that I'm in NY and there are no Amoco (or BP) I use Mobil exclusively. Part of the reason is that I have the credit card. The other is because of quality. I generally run 93 octane because I have the +4° ignition advancer and I'd rather not risk preignition with 87. Prices up here are about $3.33 for regular up to $3.59 for super. Friggin diesel is up to $3.75!!! Must suck to be a truck driver in these times.
|
Regular is still at $2.78 here.

When it's the truck - it's mileage. When it's the Superhawk - it's smileage! Even when it was running that rich it would pull like a team of horses. It just didn't like the decel and would load up. Pop, gaggle, bang, bang! Then it started coughing up through the intake. Couple shots of WD right at the choke cable collar cured the condition. Idle dropped nearly a thousand and the decel is better. Still barks - but it always did with this jet set-up. They don't sell smiles on the stock exchange. Right now, I bet they wish they did! |

I'm still waiting for the solar powered super hawk. That's where I'd put the money.

$3.04 in Charlotte, NC But I go over the SC border and get it for $2.90 when I'm on that side of town. I have a 40gal tank on the box van. Usually stop at the Flying J and get it for $2.86 on my way passed Rock Hill, SC. |
Out here in Cali...they stick it to us.....3.20-3.75.
I run super 'cuz I have the ign advancer too... |
We have been hovering between 2.70 and 2.90. Sucks to live 10 miles from Texas Motor Speedway. Any time there is an event, Nascar or Indy, prices spike 15 to 20 cents for Thursday-Monday while it is going on. Bastards. I try to get all my cars filled up before an event.
I have always heard to run the lowest octane you can without detonation. The reason? Simple, the lower the octane, the more violent the combustion = more power. The problem is, the higher the compression, the more erratic it makes it, so you have to run higher octane to please the detonation gods. |
