Fuel gauge not working

Hey guys,

Can someone point me in the right direction. Last season my fuel gage started going crazy. When the bike was sitting still it would read correctly, but when going down the road it would drop down to empty. I thought it was the fuel level sensor so I replaced it but still doing the same. Could the problem be in the instrument cluster?

You replaced the float in the tank? If so you checked the connector (under the seat at the front) You can read the resistance of the fuel level sender to see if its in the operable range but it sounds more like a connection problem.

I checked the resistance per the service manual and the readings were way out of spec at the full position. This was my reasoning for replacing the fuel level sensor w/float. I've double checked the connector, seems to be good.

So the new float has exactly correct resistance as you move the arm up and down? I would spray the connector with contact cleaner.

You can check the dash by using a potentiometer ($4 radioshck) to provide different resistance and see if the dash reads correctly.

Also check the plugs behind the dash itself. Those are suspect.

Thanks smokinjoe. I'll try both.

Oh yeah just found my sheet on it. The float should be giving the dash 81-91ohms empty and 4-10 ohms for full reading. I had it printed out to help me with my cbr dash swap.

Checked ohms..... they're dead on
Cleaned connectors.....did'nt help
Checked pins on back of dash....visually they're fine
Think I need to call in someone more electrically inclined than I.
