Which front end swap will allow CBR600F3 front wheel?

I'm plannig to do a cbr900rr rear wheel and cbr600f3 front wheel install soon. I want to retain the cbr600f3 front wheel when i install some newer USD forks. Which fork swap will easily allow me to do this?

PS i'm on a road trip, at night, near Fallon, NV, so a good technical conversation will help keep me awake :)

Thanks!
James

food for thought i did a F3 wheel on my old 919 All I did was get some f4i forks I used the f3 wheel and rotors and had to shim the calipers (919 stockers) out I think 3mm with some washers its been awhile... may give you a starting point. shouldnt be to difficult Id think.

No need for a good technical conversation, just come good technical reading. Go though and read this thread, it's very useful when looking into a USD conversion. https://www.superhawkforum.com/forum...p-guide-23751/

As for the F3 wheel, I am not positive on it but, I don't think it can be reused for and USD conversion with out a lot of work.

Most likely the axle will be the wrong diameter and some spacers would have to be made up. But like I said I am no expert on this so someone might have an easy solution. But the best idea would be to find a wheel that matches your front end and get something close for the rear.

I read about the fork conversions last week, but now i want to know specifically about the f3 front wheel and how it will work wih either rc51 or cbr front ends...

Replacing bearings and spacers is super easy for me, my biggest concern is the brake rotors, especially if i go to a radial brake front end and want to use the f3 front wheel.

Anyone have any experience with that setup?

Thanks!
James

Well if you do an RC51 front end swap you can use an SP1 6 spoke wheel which will match your 900rr rear.

bpw 08-03-2013 09:53 PM

duh, I missed the USD part my bad

voodooridr 08-03-2013 11:15 PM

If you decide to go the 929/954 route I have a set of 954 forks and axle for sale, the SP1 6 spoke wheel can still be used with a simple bearing swap

Ok... Thanks! I'm still trying to decide which forks to use. I'd really like radial brakes, for nothing other than they are neato :)

Looks like if i used a cbr1000 front end it needs 310mm rotors, so i could use blackbird rotors on an f3 wheel. I'll try and take some measurements locally and see what the rotor offsets are between a few models.

Thanks!
James

I'm part way into a cbr929 USD front end swap, and want to go with a six (or possibly five) spoke front wheel.
I already have the rotors, trees and forks, but any idea of which six spokes will fit?
I can change wheel bearings to suit the 929's 25mm spindle, but am concerned that if I go with an sp1/RC51 front wheel the 929 discs I have won't fit.

I guess if the the pitch circle diameter of the rotor mounting bolts is ok, the width of the mounting faces (distance apart from each other across the wheel)
can be dealt with by spacers if necessary.

But I'd rather just bolt one on if possible.

I'm pretty sure the 929 wheel is essentially identical to the RC-51 spoke wheel.

I've seen RC wheels on 929's with no special fitment issues???

On the USD side, the only fork swap that will allow you to use the F3 wheel is the 04-05 ZX10 set-up (the F3 Wheel being dimensionally identical to the VTR Wheel). It is one of the rare sportbikes to use a 20mm axle (like the VTR) and smallish 300mm rotors (very close to 298s on VTR). A set of RSU 900RR forks (pre-98) will also allow you to use it. This is precisely the reason I chose the ZX forks, as it allowed me to retain my PVM wheel, which is a direct replacement for the VTR/F3 wheel

as for the RC51 and 929/954 wheels, they can use teh same rotors but have different axle sizes (IIRC 22mm for RC, 25 for 9XX). You would need different bearings if swapping between the two.....

voodooridr 11-13-2013 09:04 AM

929/954 rotors bolt right up to the RC51 wheel and won't cause any issues with caliper mounting on the 929/954 forks, 929/954 bearings press right into the RC51 wheel, you'll need to cut down the 929/954 center spacer to match the RC51 length.
929/954 wheel bearings are 12mm wide compared to the RC51 bearings at 14mm.
I have all the measurements written down at home, I'll post the info tonight after work.

voodooridr 11-13-2013 09:12 AM

I knew I'd posted this info on another forum.

The 954 inner spacer is 111.10mm long and the 600RR (which is the same as the RC51) is 109.05mm long.
Both use 47mm diameter bearings but the 954's are 12mm wide and the 600RR's are 14mm.
Bothe use 110mm diameter mounting for the rotors and both have 117.05mm spacing between the rotor mounting surfaces, both use 12.5mm offset rotors.
You could easily use the narrower 954 wheel bearings and seals in the 600RR wheel and turn down the inner spacer and fab up some longer spacers for the outside.
954 outer spacers are 17.5mm on the right hand side and 10mm on the left.
If I measured correctly the total 954 bearing/spacer stack should come out at 162.6mm

I hope that helps

Thank you gentlemen, I will be hitting Ebay.
I deliberately haven't bought spacers and bearings yet as I knew there would be some differences, and can get them made up.

I would have liked to have found a way to use my existing Superhawk/Storm six spoke and Braking Wave discs but can't use the Blade discs on it- and I already have 2 sets of the USD 929 forks so the Kawa fork option is now gone.

I used my stock VTR wheel (and therefore the F3 wheel would also work) on the Showa inverted forks on my bike. It requires different bearings and custom spacers. The real downside is getting the proper rotors. It's not the spacing but rather the diameter. I ended up using 2001 GSXR750 forks which are externally identical to 929/954 parts with the only exception being the rotors are larger. I did that so I could fit CBR1100XX rotors to my VTR wheel. A keen eye will notice the CBR-XX rotors are 10mm smaller than the GSXR so that means there is a bit of overlap with the pads. Certainly not something I would do for a customer, but for my own bike it seems to be working just fine. Honestly, the brakes are not much different than stock.

If I had it to do over again I would probably swap a different rear to match a complete CBR929/954 front. That said, I'm really happy with the results but it was a lot of work and $$$.

Do you still have 954 forks and axle for sale? How much with shipping to 90240?
