Fork oil change HELP!!!!
 

Here is my problem. I am currently putting new fork seals and oil in my spare forks in order to hopefully get my current set i am riding on re-valved by Daugherty Motorsports this summer. Any ways I have them all back together and when pushing down on them they seem to be very stiff. I think i messed up when setting the oil level. I set it at 130mm from the top of the fork tube but I had the fork fully extended. I am now reading the service manual and it was saying to set level with them full compressed. So what I am asking is did i Eff up and put to much oil in the fork? Should i remove the spring and compress the fork the reset the level?

Yes you should.

Spring out, stanchion compressed. Oil level is measured to the top of the stanchion.

Ok thank you for the quick replies. I was reading the book after I finished ( friend helped with rebuild ) and remembered we set the oil level with the fork extended and was second guessing our work.

I used 130mm from the top.. springs in, forks fully extended.. worked fine!
7.5wt oil

So you really have no idea what your forks are set up for. What kind of spring did you use? Did you change valving? What is your sag, static and loaded?

Take it easy guys, save it for a real emergency, like a roadside breakdown or something.

I jumped out of an airplane once without a working reserve... , main worked fully, so it "worked fine".. still was a stupid move and not right.

But you can improvise with a dollar store turkey baster.

+1 on the old turkey baster but you got hosed, 89 cents on an after thanksgiving clearance rack..lol. I've been using one for years!

I tried that once, don't do it! They always know and the consequences are not pretty! Don't use the oven to heat parts for bearings either. Their noses can detect oil at 100 parts per billion.

Trust me Twist is right, not only for the baster but the time I cured the fork leg coating in the oven, well let's just say it wasn't the best 2 weeks of my life!

2 weeks? Your wifey is mellow... ;) Last time I used any kitchen utensils for non-sanctioned activities I got the cold shoulder for a lot longer... The upside was that I got out of cooking duty for about a month, until I was allowed entry again...

HRCA you read my mind. I went to the dollar store and bought a turkey baster used some vacuum line and a piece of metal brake line laying around to make my level tool. Jamie that as very help full i was not aware you had that info on your site. Now if only I can get over this cold i am good to go riding on sunday.
