Adjusting chain

Just had my chain slack taken out by the local supposed #1 shop in town & now while goin between 45-75 I here a sound like a large truck tire (nominally) but when letting off the throttle hear it way louder.

Anyone know what this may be?

a.) chain being tighter makes humming noise
b.) wheel not replaced properly
c.) something else
d.) paranoia
e.) none of the above and should take it back to the shop

Check the slack yourself, it should be 1 3/8". There is a sticker on the chain side of the swingarm explaining this - take a look, it is pretty easy to check it.

You don't need a stand, but sure makes it easier. Check your wheel alignmet, little notches on adjuster. Chain lubed? Is there a tight spot on sprocket when the wheel is rotated.

right, checking the chain adjustment is the first thing to do. Download the service manual from the KB section. it has it all spelled out in there, You do not need ANY tools or stands to check the chain tension / wheel alignment. If it is off, you can bring it back to the shop and show them. Your chain could be tight, loose, in need of lubercation, or wheel misaligned, or all of them, it is hard to tell in writing. You may even need a new chain, I had to replace mine at 9700 miles since the PO did not lube it often enough (the rust was a dead give-a-way). This will help.

FWIW you don't need to lift the wheel to adjust the chain slack either. Works fine with the wheel on the ground. If the chain is too tight, loosen the adjusters and give the wheel a kick forward and start there.

Don't need a stand to lift the rear wheel either. You can make do with a bottle jack if it has a "U" head. You place it under the upper left hand bolt of the shock arm (right side of bike)which is visible in the two last photos of 14-13 in the service manual.

Leave the bike on the side stand. As you lift it, the bike will balance on the jack, side stand and front wheel. You only need to lift the rear wheel maybe 1/4 inch to do what ever you want with it.

I don't know of if yelling at people usually gets you what you wan't in real life... Around here it gets you squat...

Start by checking the tension of your chain... Like numerous people have told you... Simply because that's the most obvious thing... That's what was changed and yes, that can make a humming noise like a truck tire... If it isn't that, report back...

And if you behave like a three year old, yelling at us, well don't be to surprised if we treat you like one...

HAHA! n00b mistake. You have an overly-willing group of people ready to help you, and you make yourself look like an ***!

Check post #5, ResidentG gave you at least 4 options, and that was before your little hissy fit.

Bring it back to the dealer, you questions are beyond our collective scope. JB

When I was in high school / college, I worked at a moped shop. One day this father son combo bring this kid's moped into the shop, the rear tire was half off the rim. My friend says to the dad "can I help you sir?" The dad says "yes, my son feels that his moped has a flat tire". My friend responds, "I see, well how do you feel about it sir?" That was it for me, I was on the floor LMFAO!

I think the son may have resurfaced.

The chain on your bike may have tight spots and loose spots. If the slack wasn't adjusted when the chain was tightest, the adjustment was done incorrectly.
RK1's bottle jack idea is brilliant. Get the rear wheel off the ground either by that means or by having a powerful friend tilt the bike on its sidestand until the back wheel is lifted 1/4" and, once you're confident the bike is stable, spin the back wheel. If it makes noise, identify the source. If it doesn't, have a beer and see post 5.

I'd carefully examine the swing arm/rear wheel/ spokes area. I'd search for what looks like a size large baseball card held against the spokes and secured by an extra large clothes pin. If that's not it, I'd take a SSWAG (semi-scientific wild *** guess).

Since the noise wasn't present before the chain adjustment and appeared immediately after the chain adjustment, it just might have something to do with chain adjustment.

I'd redo the chain adjustment and see if the noise goes away. If it went away I wouldn't care what it was, but that's just me.

My feeling is that it won't start because you have a flat tire. You should bring it to the dealer.

Ha! Welcome back and just hang around for a few days. Somebody is bound to start a thread with the newest version of "My VTR won't run good, what's wrong? Please help!!!!!"

When patient, sincere members ask them about their air filter, jetting, exhaust, carb sync, TPS etc. they are bound to respond that they don't know and don't care. They just need to know why the bike won't run good! Why won't you tell me?!!!

adjust your exhaust then there is a bolt in the center, you willl need a hammer, two hot chicken to whoot you on with you hitting that hammer, some duct tape, and some massage oil. After you're done with your adjustment do 10 jumping jack and 5 push up and there you go leak fix...
