factory jetkit - going back to stock

story: i'm putting the stock exhaust back on & am debating with myself about removing the K&N & using a stock filter.

i pulled the carbs & it still has the OEM main jets & pilot ( 175 / 178 ).
the needle is on the 4th clip from the top + has a washer under the e-clip.

are there any recommendations for clip position for a stock bike ?

on my last suzuki i had a hard time tuning it with a K&N with a stock
pipe.... any suggestions ? will spending the $50 save me a bunch of time ?

or should i just buy new OEM needles ? i bought the bike with the mods so i don't know how they ran stock.

FWIW, stock bikes carb better with the needle raised with an extra shim (radio shack washer mod).

just make sure you sychro the carbs

I am running stock jetting with just the shim mod with a K&N, runs real nice this way.

well i found an old post that helps.

"I am running yosh slip ons,(they have baffling in them) that is my only mod (as far as the engine is concerned). The examples given in the factory kits are using straight through exhaust (D&D and 2bros)

They go from needle position 2 (stock) to 4 (straight through exhaust)."

but now i'm wondering about the washer under the e-clip... it looks like there
was a washer in the OEM drawing so Factory probably used it also ?

further searches provided that the stock washer was .020" . so i doubt they are stock.

This may be too late to help. I have a Factory Pro 1.1 on my 2001. What worked for me with the stock pipes and K+N or BMC was:
Front mj. 180
Rear mj. 182
Needle 3rd clip from top, .5 mm. washer
Fuel screws 1 ½ x out
Pilot jets 48

I had an issue with a crimped vacuum line. Pulling the tank on and disconnecting/reconnecting the vacuum lines caused the lines to pinch somewhere, the bike would run but not well. I replaced the factory vacuum lines to tougher fuel line and rerouted them away from pinch points. May not be your problem but worth checking out. I have not jetted a VTR with the factory kit but I have had success with the dynojet. Id suggest running a wide band afr on it to see whats happening with your fuel mixtures. More than likely its a little lean raise the needle one clip. Your mains are probably a little rich too. I am running 175 front and rear and still get as rich as 11.8:1 under load.

Cheers

Joel
