Exhaust question for the mechanically inclined

Hey guys i know there are lots of you that are quite mechanically inclined and being a young guy with no formal training and only basic knowledge i dont know the answer to this... i have an awesome 78 kz 650 that i did tons of work too and it needs an exhaust before all the body work and cleaning it was dropped... hard... and i need an exhaust, if i can find a nice clean header could i just MAKE a can?? i want it to be original and i want to know if i do something totally different than a pipe i would buy will i mess with the tuning of the bike?

also people like Corn who have done custom work what did you use???

Thanks a ton!

Yes, making one is completely possible if you have the tools... Yes, making something completely different than what you have will mess with the setup and means you need to re-tune the carbs...

The basic is to have similar or close to similar flow through it as what you have... Since it's not really an option to try and calculate all of the parameters, do the basic... Same pipe diameter into it and out, same lenght of the flow path and no significant bends and you get similar flow...

Materials that are easy to use are alu sheets and rivets... Those you can work with with basic tools, add steel parts for the ends and a welder and you are set...

Awesome, good stuff to start off with, it really just seems like i need to re-do the slip on piece mid pipes are decent and im going to be blasting and cleaning the header so the end is all i will need to fab!

thanks for the reply tweety
