Engine compatibility

Hi guys, just wondering if anyone could tell me if the engine out of a first series VTR1000F is exactly the same as the second series. In other words can I put an 97 engine in a 04 bike?

yes, same across all years as far as fitment.. Very minor changes only in timing and case colors.. but nothing to change swapping a motor from any year to any year

What he said ;) Depending on the size of your project there are some minor differences between the wiring harnesses regarding a few things like the different instrument clusters and also the ignition and converter boxes (plugs are different) between '98-'00 and '01-05. But if just swapping engines it should be a straight up swap.
