Electrical gremlin

I recently had an RR failure and resolved the problem with an R1 RR swap.....

4 days later my bike would not start and the battery would hold no charge, after a warranty replacement on the battery i tried again......2 days later same deal.....bike will not hold enough of a charge to crank for more than a few seconds if at all.....

voltage on volt meter read at battery is 13.71 at 5000rpm

Hawkrider 07-05-2007 11:12 PM

Check the battery and starter connections. What's the battery voltage at 2000 rpm?

HisHawkiness 07-06-2007 10:51 AM

iv got a voltmeter and have checked it to be 13.7 at 5000... but now that the battery is dead i cant start the bike to check at 2000 rpm.....even with the battery charger on engine start it wont fire up.....hell today it wouldnt even push start...

battery connections are very tight, the starter looks good but who knows..

its not just draining the battery, it completely kills them....

Recheck the connections in your RR replacement. Maybe crimped a wire in the assembly process?

HisHawkiness 07-08-2007 12:05 PM

he RR seems good, i just wish the symptom my battery is giving me could give me some indication

completely dead will not hold charge....i wonder if that means theres a short or if that means something is drawing on it while its off or something

How old is the battery? It may be time for a new one.

EDIT: Oh, I see.. warranty replacement.. huh...

Dead cell in the battery. It's happened before when the RR fails it takes out the battery with it.

Get the bike running with a jump, and check the charge again. Maybe your other rr never failed thus a new one didnt solve your probs. Se what the out put voltage is again at 2k like hawkrider said. Maybe something else in your charge system is bad... Stator?

Scooberhawk 07-09-2007 09:30 AM

What else would kill a battery? If you've got a new R/R, and the new battery came after the R/R...

I'm thinking either the new battery is a dud, the new R/R is f-ed, or you have a bad connection somewhere. Is it possible that there is a part, like the starter relay, that, if it failed, would allow 12V and ground to make a direct connection? That would make short work of a battery.

Also, have you checked resistance readings on the new R/R? I don't know off-hand what they should be, but there should be specs for that.

Go check out this site. http://www.electrosport.com/
you mine as well just put new battery, aftermarket RR from this place, and a new stator, also from Electrosport, or you will be chasing trons for the next few years. It gets very complicated what goes bad but the web site will explain. I went thru this last year and this is what I ended up doing.

did we ever get an answer for this ?
