Does a failing R/R destroy the starter and rotor?
I had the bike on a battery tender for the last 10 mo. and it always started until recently. I figure it is probably the R/R and I'm planning on a Mosfet type R/R upgrade.
Last night I spoke to Honda MC Tech who told me that since my R/R is failing, my starter and rotor are probably destroyed. He said even if I upgrade the R/R, the bike will leave me stranded and not start once the battery charge weakens. Is this true? How would I know if the starter and rotor are any good. I am not a mc mechanic or tech by I can figure stuff out with a little information and direction from this awesome forum. Thanks in advance. |
Depends on how soon you catch it. Can it? Possibly. Will it? I went through two R/Rs (about 3 years apart) before going to a MosFet R/R and other than a fried battery I had no other issues. (though it is possible that other things get damaged too, don't ride with a bad R/R)

That's what I thought. I didn't ride the bike this year so hopefully the R/R upgrade will do the trick.

I went through 2 R/R in 3 months and one caught fire. everything else works fine now.
