Damn Blinkers

A few weeks ago my blinkers went out on my bike. Me and a friend looked at it and we figured it was the relay..well I got a new one yesterday and I put it on and when I turned on the blinkers the relay would click, click, click and the lights on cluster aren't coming on and obviously none of the blinkers work neither. I'm sure it is electrical, but anyone have any ideas on anything specific to look at, if that makes sense....

My blinkers were intermittent (not a regular on/off/on/off) and I traced it back to a short on the actual switch on the handlebar. Rancho Motorcycles in Ranco Cordova, CA (Excellent salvage yard btw) had a replacement for $20.

It turned out that that switch had a faulty horn switch, but the blinkers now work and I never use the horn anyway.....

Good Luck!

Might look at that first then....hopefully it is something simple and easy/cheap to fix..

Thanks.

I used a multimeter, they are very useful - I think now would be a good time to invest in one.

Yeah, I've read about the handlebar switches going bad. Can't remember if it was Euro VTR's or US. Maybe you could take that apart, clean it, reseal it and try it. Do a search for handlebar switches going bad. It's in there somewhere.

It's not that they "go bad"... it's the moisture and dirt that gets in over the years combined with the grease in there getting old and hard... then stuff starts to stick or have bad connection... Or shorts... so taking it apart and cleaning it and a dollop of new dielectric grease is a good idea...

Yeah I will have to clean them...but I went to show a buddy of mine what was going on and the blinkers worked all of a sudden. They were working all night last night and all this morning...but I will clean everything just to make sure that if they go out again than it has to be something electric...
