Crazy fuel guage!

I'm new to the Superhawk world (but not new to motorcycling). I bought a used 2003 a couple weeks ago and the fuel guage acts very screwy. Just one example, yesterday I put ~110 miles on the tank and the fuel guage still showed 4 of 6 bars.

Other times it will show a somewhat accurate reading and then all of a sudden it will drop a couple bars or show a full tank when I know its not even close to full!

Any ideas on troubleshooting this problem? I have found no rhyme or reason to the readings.

Mine does just the opposite. Filled to the brim it is still a bar short of full, and it is down to the flashing reserve light when I have over a gallon left. I was told it's the fuel level sensor and is a common fault. I have a good enough sense of my mpg under various riding conditions/styles that I just rely on the trip meter. By the time it needs gas I'm ready to get off for a stretch anyway.

Mine has been accurate since new (2002), but will fluctuate 1-2 bars depending on how the bike is leaning - uphill, downhill, sidestand, etc.

Gauge?!?! Wouldn't that be nice. All I have is that annoying little orange light! It's sort of like a Jack-n-the-Box - you keep cranking the throttle until all of a sudden POP! Normally this happens right after passing the last gas station before home.

I keep forgetting that the later models came with an actual gauge.

It's a rod/float setup just like in a toilet. You can calibrate it (cough... bend it cough) if you don't mind removing it which requires tank removal. :-)

Thanks! Tank removal is not a big deal... however I've never seen the underside of a Hawk tank. Is it gonna be obvious which piece I need to take out of the tank to "calibrate" the float? I was hoping it was as easy as a float adjustment of some kind.

I believe its the round plate that the wires go to that needs to be removed for access to the float assembly. There's probably a gasket under there so be careful when you remove it...

Yeah, it's pretty obvious. The gasket is a reusable o-ring so no need to get another one.

Excellent news! Thanks guys!
