Clicking sound
 

Okay so I've had my Honda superhawk for about 5 months. I was riding it earlier and after I got to about 3000 RPMs I noticed clicking sound. I returned home shut the bike off later cool re start it and it made the noise again. So I shut I off and let it cool down. Went to go out and put the bike away for the night and no noise. I reved it up too 5000 RPMs to try to make the noise and nothing. Thinking it might be my cam tensioner????

VTR1000's have a bad reputation for breaking the tensioner spring, and if it happens when you've got the revs up you can cause serious engine damage when the loose camchain jumps a few teeth on the sprocket and the valves hit the piston.

If you suspect the tensioner has failed (usually the front one) you should be able to feel a lack of spring if you remove the service cap and insert a flat blade screwdriver into the tensioner and turn. Or (more involved ) remove the cam cover and manually check the tension between the sprockets. I wouldn't run the engine again until you are certain the tensioners are OK.

The first thing I did for my VTR was install manual tensioners, great for peace of mind.

Gosh, it's almost impossible to diagnose with such a brief explanation. Could be an exhaust leak among many other problems. Best thing (for us to help) would be a short video of the noise when it's happening.


Most important in this vid is the sound during the motor coming down the revs. That is where the tensioner is being "leaned" on most.

If you had the chain skip a tooth or multiple teeth, the noise would happen 100% of the time.

I had a video of it. For some reason it won't load. I brought the bike to a shop and they didn't hear anything. I couldn't believe that the bike won't make the noise anymore. It was making earlier today. Brought it to the shop nothing. Drove it around nothing. Raced it nothing. One mechanic said it could just be needing valve adjustment

Did you check oil level? Did it make the sound whenever revved or just when riding and under load? If while riding it could be driveline based or similar. Also try to figure if it does it under load or free revving.

If its gone, then just move on.
