Will a rear shock from a cbr954rr fit the superhawk?

You can make it fit but it's too short and under sprung. Our resident shock specialist is superbling, I think he's had about 20 or so different shocks on. You can go to an aftermarket shock site and get the length and stroke for most bikes but you also have to figure in bike weight and the leverage of the swingarm and links.

I read as much as I can find on earlier posts here, and still have not been able to sort out any good alternatives to the pricey aftermarket choices. Most appear to be too soft. I'm curious what modifications you made when installing shorter shocks. I have 5 used shocks available to me that are a bit smaller (1/2" inch to 3/4") but I do not know the specs for them. Most came from older 600s that were used on the race track. Would they generally be to "light" since the 600s of a few years ago were piggier?

Has anyone had their OEM shock reworked with a separate reservoir? If so is the final product worth the expense?

Yes, a cbr9XX series will work but the springs are a tad lighter than the VTR spring but it's not TOO much. They are the closest match in the honda line along with cbr1100xx but the blackbird isn't a great shock either. I ran a penske 954 shock sprung for a 210lbs rider so it was juuust right for the 'hawk. The valving was good but my used vtr ohlins is better.

Don't confuse bike weight with spring rate; it also has to do with geometry, leverage ratios, etc. Use racetech's online spring calculator to see if those "track shocks" might work. Those typically have higher rate springs than street based units. The SuperHawk, unfortunately, has a very heavy spring and is also one of the longest shocks around.

You need a spacer and possibly a longer bolt for the upper mount to mate a shorter shock. These are an improvement over a worn stocker but aren't the holy grail like a quality aftermarket unit so don't spend much on one. Warning: 9XX series shocks are now sought out by the vfr crowd doing the same thing.

That's what I said...all have a part in it. One of the most similar ones I saw when looking was an older Yamaha 600 shock so if it's older you've got a better shot. Wasted hours and hours and hours tryng to match one up and not get outbid on it. :wink:

I have a stock 2001 929RR shock just sitting in my garage. Would it be an improvement over my stock 98 superhawk shock? I'm 170lbs. Also, does the resevoir face forward or backward? If facing backward do you have to do any cutting to the rear undertail?

Like I said, I ran a penske 954 shock which has a remote reservoir unlike the stocker with a piggyback style.

Since the 954/929 series are shorter, you "may" not have clearance issues with the reservoir. BTW, it's not the fender, rather the battery box, that's in the way. You could run it backwards but that puts the reservoir near or above the rear exhaust which I don't like and might put the adjustment screws in a bad position.

Your stock 98 shock should be gone by now but since it's a slow death we don't really notice the degradation in ride quality.

Will a 2002-2006 RC51 shock fit. I see an ohlins available but do not know the length for the RC?
Bling did you elude to having a used ohlins for the hawk to sell?

Nope, different lower mount on the RC but if it's got ride hieght adjustment you could change it.
