Can the Std rear shock be regassed and oiled?
 

My friends rear shock on her '99 has lost most its damping.
I know some std shocks can be rebuilt despite the advice from the manufacturere stating the oposite.
Does anyone know if the Superhawk [Firestorms] can be?

And before you say it, yes we know you can get any number of after market brands to suit, but these are not in her budget.
All we want to do is recon the std unit and save some bucks

the VTR's OEM shock can indeed be rebuilt. Perhpas in doing so you can have it done by a knowledgeable tech and have it re-valved to better suit her needs. The shock I am currently running has been re-built and had a Race-Tech valving package installed. Works fine now :)

I didn't mean to be flippant; I was just in a hurry. One of these would probably work, although, as mikstr says, the shock can be regassed and revalved, but at a considerably higher cost than these used shocks on eBay which may be adequate for your friend's needs.

I have one I got of ebay $20 + shipping and its yours $10 loss to me but dont need it and we need to keep the bikes on the road.

In order to service the rear shock a hole must be drilled into the nitrogen chamber first. After that the disassembly and servicing is the same as any other shock. A Schrader valve must then be welded to shock body in order to charge it again. That's the hard part of the whole process.
