Cam tensioners!!
 

hi all, Ive had my new firestorm about 4 months, and the guy who had the bike beforehand bought it from a dealership in 2007, on his reciept it says replaced tensioners, soooooo... the bike since he purchased it has only done 2k miles and ive only done 700, whats the life expectancy of these things, cos i do hear a lot of threads say cam chain tensioners this/that.

The bike has done 38k and they were changed say 36k.

any thoughts?

well for what i have read on the forum its not if they will go but when they will go. Many on here have done the APE cct's. Why not drop the $120 bucks and get a set that way you don't worry about it when your seeing 150mph.

Once again, the sky is falling, the sky is falling........ I guess the over 50k miles i put on my first set of stock CCTs was just plane luck....... :rolleyes:

Don't let it sit an idle on the sidestand and don't over run the motor and the stockers work fine, Sure manual CCTs are nice but the whole thing is way overblown IMHO and like always YMMV

Once again. if the auto tensioners just explode with no reason and at anytime, why did the Moriwaki race bikes use them???

So why does running on the sidestand cause them to fail?

Because one of the contributing reasons is probably not enough lubrication on the heads, and idling to long on start up with not enough oil pressure won't help...

Yeah, stock CCT's are fine if you know the condition of the engine and CCT's and take care of them... And swap them at decent intervals...

But with unknown variables, manual CCT's might get you peace of mind...

Because the angle it sits at doesn't allow much oil to splash up there so it runs dry. It's just info i was given by a respected source many years ago.

I will just leave it at that as this has been beat into the ground but like I have said I put at least 50k if not more on my original CCTs and only changed them when I realized I had let them go that long.

I did notice a difference when I changed them and don't recommend you let them go that long before replacement, as they are a wear item but the stock units have worked well for me.

That reminds me, I have over 25k miles on this set, maybe I should look into a new set.......lol

its true that the stock ccts are fine... maybe... and that is what worried me about it. It seems to me like playing Russian roulette with your motor. For the cost of doing it, the peace of mind that comes from it is worth every penny. I can tell you this much if you where flying with this motor in an airplane would you chance sudden failure without warning? I wouldn't. Also I ran mine to 45k miles before replacing so... its how all over the charts miles wise the failures are at.

I had ape's installed and could never get the adjusted properly. Then I had the shop that installed them do the adjustment, still no change. Super noisy clatter tap knock noise that varied with rpm's. They stuck new stock CCT's in and it purrs like a kitten. I will change them out at reasonable intervals but if thats what it takes to make it run right, I'm all for it. Couple that with the fact that I know people who have put tons of miles on stockers (and don't warm up or idle the bike on sidestand) that I trust.
