brake rotor problem. Need help please.
 

hey guys. I need some help here please. When I took the bike out of storage this season I noticed some pulsation when braking. Mind you I have the gixxer calipers on there. So I lifted the front wheel off the ground and tried rolling it with my hand and found that the rotors where binding on the brake pads. The wheel would turn a couple times and it would stop. So I checked the rotors and wouldn't you know it, the left rotor is bent by about 1 MM. I did a search on this forum and I noticed people talking about the aluminum carriers. Now the question is, how do you work with the carriers to straighten the rotor out. Thanx

I reckon you could stuff around forever yourself and this will still not be perfect. My advice would be to take it to a specialist with the right equipment to fix this for you.

And make sure you give them the wheel as well. I have had brakes done and after the fact found out the mount to the wheel was the problem.

are they superhawk rotors? you may be able to find some on fle-bay? If not I have a friend that works for honda in fla. and sells me parts at cost + 10% and I may be able to get free shipping let me know.I was hoping to ride with you to the blessing of the bikes!!!!!

Hey superhawk Neil. I will have the problem fixed today hopefully. I have stock rotors. I will let you know of the outcome and yes I have stock rotors. I am gonna take em to my friend's shop to run them on a feeler gauge and attempt to fix em.

Shayne are you talking about the aluminum carrier that connect the rotors to the wheel? yeah, I believe the problem lies there.

well, we fixed the rotor as much as we could. When the wheel is rolled, both rotors look straight. Pulsation is a lot less now, when the left rotor is STILL draggin. I took it off and rebuilt the left caliper and it is the same now. Could the rotor still be bent but not be visible???

Yep. Get a caliper to measure run out or go to someone who has one.

You might want to talk to this guy about the rotors, he had the same problem.

It's a tool for measuring, I know it has another name but it escapes me at this time.

It's like a micrometer that you can set up to measure run out.

That's what the machine shop used to straighten the rotor but they couldn't straighten it out all the way. I think I need a replacement.

Did they do it on the wheel or by itself?

I think you may be referring to a dial indicator.

What I mean when I say a specialist may need the wheel, is that in my case, it was not the rotor or the carrier but the wheel itself that needed attention.

I rode off (or tried to) with a disc lock on...... :oops:

That was on another bike. Unless you have had a get-off I think it would be unlikely that this would happen on the VTR. But if they have the wheel then all bases are covered.

The wheel is straight and yes they has the wheel/rotor combo. Thanx for your replies guys.
