Bike won't start, no gas

I was adding some fuel additive and dropped the cap in the tank. Couldn't see the cap with the tank on the bike, so pulled it off and drained most of gas. Took forever with some shaking and turning but finally got cap in a spot where I could grab it with some extendable claws. Tank is back on, lines connected, petcock turned on, won't start. Or it won't start now. I first put in a small amount of gas and tried starting it and it did, ran for short period and cut out. I had the back of the tank elevated so I figured it was just gas starved. I didn't try to start it again. That was five days ago. Today, fill half way, won't start. Not familiar with the inside of the tank. Could I have messed up something inside the tank with the shaking and turning? When it turns over sound likes no gas or the kill switch is on. Any ideas

Did you shut the fuel off at the under tank petcock and forget to turn it back on?

Do you have the vacuum line on the correct nipple on the petcock?

I vote with superhawk138. It's way to common.

petcock vacuum line goes on the niple pointing to the side (blue) nothing goes on the niple pinting down (red) it is just an atmospheric vent

Yep, vacuum hose in right place and turned petcock off and back on. I have had tank off before lots of times but never manhandling like I did this time. Gonna pull it off, drain it and start over with install. Not smelling gas on start so thinking it's not leaving tank. Original start after installing tank could have been from gas in bowls?

Torn fuel petcock diaphragm !

Check the diaphragm as Kenmoore said and double check that the fuel filter didn't get messed up while shaking and stuff and a piece didn't get lodged in the petcock.

Just the musings of an old man but, when I had a 16 liter tank with the petcock mounted like yours I had a similar problem. After a major cuss storm, and checking every connection, I discovered that I had dislodged the vac. line from the manifold spigot! Problem solved. Just a thought.

So I pulled the tank, removed the petcock and took petcock apart. Diaphragms looked fine, put it back together and reinstalled everything. Put some gas it the tank and started right up. Rode it for half hour and all good. Was not able to remove fuel filter as the plastic part inside tank had swelled and would not fit thru hole, looked fine. Not a clue as to original problem.
