Bike is acting choppy
So I have been having some smoothness issues at 3000-3500 rpm. It gets really rough in then studders and spits until it passes it by. My question is what the problem could be, possible solutions. Last week I ballanced the carbs cleaned the BMC air filter and it still had the same problem. Then put some carb cleaner down fuel lines into carb float bowls and still same problem. So today a sprayed some carb cleaner around the rubber carb boots and noticed the idle drop. Could this be my problem or should I look into other things like sticky carb slides ect or maybe leaned out? I have stock exhaust and 40000 miles on my 2000 hawk. Thanks

In your climate putting some SeaFoam in the next few tanks of fuel may help. If not, you may have some carb issues if the bike sat for long periods (greater than 3 mo) without being started or drained.

Sounds like you have a vacuum leak around the carb boots.

Thanks guys I just wanted to make sure I wasnt way off base here. Oh and I never let the bike sit very long too much fun to ride:D. Im going to try replacing the boots as soon as I get them. While Im at it I will ispect everything else on the carbs as well.

Make sure the carbs are seated properly and the clamps are tight before you start buying new parts.

bump, sofar have ruled out anything fuel related now I need to check ignition related any suggetions for what could be making my bike do this in this department

please let me know how this works out. I am having the same issue with 5000 miles and it was doing it at 3600.... Getting upsetting, about to bring it to the stealership... running out of options here.

Interesting I have been consider paying the stealership the $90 diagnostic fee. Im very frustrated trying to find the issue. Its almost like Its leaning out in the low end but it still backfires regularly on decel. Except since nothing was changed I don't understand where the issue is. Ahhh!:mad:

SeaFoam can be used in varying quantities depending on the humidity/rain pressure. Under good conditions you can use as little as a couple capfuls per tank. Under higher pressure situations I think you could use 3-4 oz per tank. I rarely use more than a couple oz per tank.

So seafoam cleans carbs out better than the yamaha stuff you pour down floats? Also I cracked open carbs to have a look and visually they are spotless I have never seen float bowls so clean. Do you still think I might need to use the seafoam?

Re; the advice from jbaxx and Hawkrider. Did you make sure the carbs are fully seated? Did you replace the boots like you said? clamps nice and tight etc.?
They gave what seems to me good advice given your symtoms. Can't tell from your subsequent posts whether you took it or not. |
1- Don't over-tighten the boot clamps
2- backfire could be PAIR (emission control) doing it's job, Not a rich condition. |
Take some carb cleaner and spray it around the boots while the bike is running, you'll know almost instantly if you have a leak, also is your bike backfiring on decel? I had this problem, found it to be a loose boot.

Well I replaced boots just in case, and yes I seated them right and tightened the clamps. I removed the pair a while back so thats not what is causing the backfires. I finally gave in and took my bike into the dealership. They are a week out. I guess you know when you are addicted to motorcycles when a week seems like an enternity

Did you get the bike in yet? Did you try Hillsboro Mortocycles?
They Got the backfire out of my bike...... no charge- Of course I bought it there. Now it has a superfun pop a low speeds when it's cold, yeah! |
