Battery Drain: R/R or Something else?
 

I have been having a problem with the battery draining down on my 98 SH. I put a new battery in it and 3 weeks later it is toast. I took out the volt meter and the honda shop manual and went to work. The manual states a .1 mA max for current leakage. My bike has around .5 mA. I traced this down to the odometer fuse and then I pulled the insterment cluster thinking that was the problem. Doing some research on this website (which is awsome by the way) I found that most of the battery problems are due to the R/R. The last time I rode my bike, I had to jump the battery when I went to work (36 miles) and when I got back on it after work the battery was dead. I was able to bump start it and then when I got home the battery smelled like sulfer. I think that it is the R/R. However what about the leakage current? Is that normal? If it isn't, should I worry about it? I calculated that at .5 mA draw it would take about 2 years for the battery to go dead. Thanks for your help again. This bike has 33,000 miles on it and hasn't given me any problems until now. Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the info. I saw this thread in my research. I am most curious about the odometer current drain. Is that normal? According to the shop manual it isn't. Any and all help is much appreciated.
