backfiring?

My SH backfires sometimes when stopped or slight revs, but never under load. Is this normal?? It is all factory.

Re: backfiring?

Well, let's clarify something first. Does it backfire through the airbox or afterfire (also called backfiring by many) through the mufflers?

Re: backfiring?

If it only happens once in a while, well...... welcome to the "character" of the superhawk. I hate to say it's normal but it's a common thing. I tend to think of it as a hiccup.

Everyone once and awhile it will make it die, that kinda sucks.

Re: backfiring?

as far as the hiccup goes, i tend to look funny trying to "burb my hawk by gently patting its gas tank!

Re: backfiring?

This is a common problem with VTR (part of it's personality). The runlevel list had plenty of occurences of this cough stop problem. Most of it can be helped by carby balancing (syncronising) and making sure idle is at least 1200 rpm. If it happens after hard braking it could be related to carby venting. Both of these subjects are covered by one of the best VTR sites about Greg Nemish's from the old list.

Greg is somewhat of a VTR god what he doesn't know about the VTR is not worth knowing. Maybe this flattery will bring him out of hibernation. I have seen him post on this list before.

Hey Greg whats going on ???

I don't think that vent rerouting fix makes any sense.

My bike stopped burping, grunting and farting the instant i removed the PAIR system. Best money I never spent.

And I agree about Greg being a VTR god although we seem to have a few members here that could be at least cannonized.

go there, read about the pilot circuit.. then youll get it. your bike is surely running lean. beef up pilot jet for major adjustment IF and only IF you adjust the fuel/mix screws les than a 1/2 from factory setting and you dont have a constant cruise speed without fluctuating throttle position to keep that low ide, 1/4 throttle speed.

My SH tended to run erratic at the normal 1k idle so yeah I jacked mine to 1200/1300 and it runs better. I can also shut off the choke a hair sooner now.

Mine also smells a little gassy when I come pulling up to stop signs some times. It's running o.k. so I'm not going to mess with it unless somebody has a really good quick fix. (shyea!)
