The big thing I noticed was the weight of the bike and the way it didnt like to turn corners the first time because i wasnt used to the weight of it. Its got a fairly flat torque curve so will want to rip your head off when you open the the throttle for the first time, so obviously take it easy. You might get a little cramp in the legs because of the differant riding position.

Think thats about it, just take it easy, if you can take it somewhere quiet and out of the way too

I went from a '92 Nighthawk 750 to my '02 'Hawk - big difference in power and handling but it was easy to get used to... Any bike should last a long time with proper care.

Its 21 degrees and snowing currently, I am getting anxious to ride again!

750 Nighthawk to the 996 Superhawk isn't a traumatic transition. The biggest difference is going to be the sensation of forward thrust without much fuss while doing so. The big twins make mucho torque for a wide rpm spread resulting in casual express experiences.

The 996 does reward a correct ergo setup and well adjusted chain, throttle cables, shock damping etc. All that goes to the smmoove ride.

With proper maintenance and the ccts and R/R dealt with the bike will keep running a very long time. (several out there with well over 150,000 miles on them)

(CCTs = Cam Chain Tensioner, search for it on forum, R/R = Voltage Regulator)
