Another what is this noise.. Cams/ head this time

I hate doing this….. Two “What noise is this” threads in one week.
The noise… think hinge that needs oil.. half squeak half groan.
Front head only.
You can “feel” the noise while it is happening at the cam journal caps and more so the top chain guide
Noticed it today, when starting the bike.. You cannot hear the noise while running.. But while starting.. or as I found when I got it back to the garage,, when you turn it over by hand.
Yes I have MCCT’s, yes there are adjusted correctly,(front may have been 1/2 turn to tight when this started),, Yes I re checked,,, tis how I located the noise at the front head.. Could not tell where it was coming from before I got to that detail. Even loosened the front MCCT to see if that changed the noise.. NOPE
It feels and sounds like it is coming from the top cam chain guide???? Or at least the vibration is strongest there as well as the heard noise……
Noise is not constant though entire cam revolution.. Is worse when the intake cam is opening the valves.
Next up, I’ll pull the cam journal caps…if they look ok, I’ll put them back with out the top guide,, see if the noise is still there.. If not,,, I know, if so,,,,,
Pull the cams and check the journals .. If I find damage in the journals,,,, then I know it’s that.

Am I missing something else?

I would remove the valve cover IMMEDIATELY. Remove the cam caps and make sure the bearing surface isnt scarring at all. Its possible an oil passage way has clogged.

I had this happen on a suzuki and it seized and SNAPPED MY CAM IN HALF. Ya the results from that were not good.

Im not trying to scare you, im just saying its better to investigate early because it could be bad.

If you find no shavings or and signs of damage on the cam lobes or bearings i wouldnt worry about it too bad.

Valve covers are off, thats how I isolated the noise to the front head, the cams and more so the top chain guide.

And yes, thanks,, The cam jurnal caps are coming off in a few minutes,, If the are ok,,, they go back on without the guide for a noise test

sounds good

well crap. Not the top guide... so.. I'm done for the night.. Next up pull the cams and see what the caps an bottom half of the journal's look like. After that it has to be the CCT side chain guide

if the upper bearing surface on the caps look good chances are the bottom bearing surface will look good too. Hope you can figure it out.

How loud is this noise?
