Ok guys, I've been fighting this thing for a while now. I finally resolved my low vacuum to the petcock and I can keep her running for a while but I still have quite a bit of smoke. I'm hoping that since this was a salvaged engine that it's just got a ton of oil residue from lying around and just needs to run for a while to burn it all off if not what else could cause my burning of oil? Thanks for any help.

well theres only 2 places that oil can enter the comb chamber one is rings
and the other is a bad valve guide/oil seal. when you say salvaged motor
did it come from a wreak or a bike tear down etc .... any history like miles on motor could have been abused or damage in a crash do a compression and leak down test on the front and back and compare to specs in service manual.

and go from there

Yeah, that was my concern. I know the engine came from a wrecked bike but was it was sold to me as a good running engine from NE Cycle Salvage in TX. I just let her run for 20 minutes or so and pulled the rear plug and it does have oli on it. So I guess I can't be excited at this point. I'm no motorcycle engine mechanic but I guess it's time to learn. I've built a few small blocks in my days can't be all that different. I have the factory service manual, so at least I have a reference point. Thanks for the info. I wish I had just pulled my old engine apart and rebuilt the bottom end. It had a knock and I didn't want to have to get into it if I could just get a known good motor and swap it. Oh, well.....

It is possible the thing was not kept upright all the time it was out of the old bike frame or crash.

It could have oil in the cylinder(s) from being flipped upside down. I would check teh oil level and run it some forst before planning to take her apart.

yeah, that's what I did this morning. ran it for almost 30 minutes got it to temperature. it's got oil in the pipes and still fresh oil on the plugs :(

I feel dumb for having to ask this but is Oof... just an expression or is it an acronym for something I don't know about, lol.

i have a real strong feeling about the f in oof. o's could be anything.

btw OKC if you kept the old motor you've got parts and something to practice on. factory manual and this forum...how tough could a rebuild be? oof

I agree with what thumper said. Check the air cleaner, to see if any oil in in the intake track. And last but not least, check your oil level on the bike.

I think oof is how many zero's you get before you get to oh fuck!

My track bike was an insurance total with less than 2k mi.. It smoked quite a bit until I changed the stock cans. I got black flagged my first two sessions at the track with it. I'm guessing the bike laid on its side long enough to fill the top end of the engine with oil. When they stood it up they tried to start it right away and loaded the packing in the cans with oil. I swapped the cans from my street SH and ran them on the track bike and voila no smoke. I ran the rashed pipes and cans on the street SH, there wasn't a live mosquito within a hundred yards of he road for a couple hundred miles. I ended up buying a set of used stock exhaust because I never was able to get the rashed ones to stop smokin'.

Could have also loaded the cans as it was laid over and it would take thousands of miles to burn that out of a can.
