Air Box question!

1 Attachment(s)
So after removing my air box for the resuscitation of my '98 SH I gave the outside and inside a thorough cleaning. Inside of the air intake horn on the longest radius in each of the inlets there was a a piece of open cell foam set into a recess of the air intake. Needless to say the foam crumbled to the touch and fell apart. I had my resident rocket scientist take a look at it and his best guess was it was to pre-scrub big objects like bugs or pieces of dirt out of the airstream or possibly help separates moisture from the incoming air on rainy days... Anyone have any ideas? I could fabricate two pieces of foam easily enough, but are they really needed?

At first I thought you were talking about the foam inside the airbox. Now I see you are talking about the foam inside the snorkel.

My best guess would be to dampen the noise from the valve overlap. Other than that, I removed my snorkel completely and never looked back.

Bobby, search here for "F.I.L. Mod". Micky and I went about installing a filter in the airbox lid with, what I believe as a fantastic improvement. I can't wait to see how the F.IL. Mod works with my mildly built engine :D

My snorkel hasn't had any thing in it since I bought it.

Prior to getting to work on the FIL set-up, I had carved out the snorkle (with a dremel), resulting in an approximate doubling of the intake area....
