Advice: The bike has sat for a year w/gas
Hi Forum,
It's been a while. Due to a hand injury followed by a back injury the bike has sat for about a year in the garage. I got it started back in fall for a little bit. It would idle with the choke open, but would die if revved. The gas has Stabile in it but I doubt if that matters at this point. The battery is undoubtedly dead. But the bike is covered, has new tires, and generally was a good runner (except for the CCT's and electrics) before all this. I have a free day and finally decent weather here in WI to deal with this. Where would you begin? Kendrick |
Jets are clogged...
My mental sanity is way to important to me to clean jest these days only to get it back together and have jetting issues from a still partially plug, nicked, damaged jet.. So I just replace um, every bike every time.c So my opinion... order new pilots and mains, then disassemble, clean, install new jets and a new fuel screw O rings.. |
Dammit, I wanted the answer with the method to half-ass it and get it going, but you make too good of a point. Thanks, sanity is useful.

Do not dip carb body in old style carb cleaner dip... Once clean, put er back together and see what happens. |
Mine sat for two yeara. Same symptoms. Do you really think the mains need to be changed also? I KNOW my pilots were clogged, but the mains too?

Likely not the mains, and you don't have to change anything, just clean. The mains are huge compared to an I4 or something smaller displacement, and don't easily clog. Still, if you're in there, it only takes 10 seconds to screw out the mains and another minute to clean each one. I like using a single strand of copper wire to clean the pilots. The hole in the end is smallest and most difficult to clean. Poke the strand through the large end, thatta way you know when the gunk comes out.
