6 piston caliper conversion
 

G'day guys.

I know a lot of you have done this swap, and I need some advice for an Aussie owner who has just done the conversion.

He along with a competent friend have fitted the new calipers and bled the brakes. They reckon all the air is out.

The problem is that the brake lever now goes all the way to the handgrip, which he finds disconcerting. It has been suggested that he needs a larger size master cylinder to accommodate the larger caliper.

I don't remember any of you guys mentioning this problem before, and I cannot look at the bike myself.

Is the stock m/cylinder up to the job, or do you think it is just not bled properly yet?

I don't think they bled them properly. When I did my conversion, I replaced the M/C as well. So if they keep on pumping the lever does it level out a little or does it keep going to the handlebar?

You do need to match the master to the calipers, but that level of mismatch sounds extreme.

But keep in mind that you can't really ever hope to "fix" mismatched parts.

I agree with AZZKIKER. I did the conversion on mine and didn't have the gsxr master and used the orig. vtr cylinder. I had a very solid feel and it didn't come close to going in all the way. Tell them to crack open the banjo bolt for the master, pull the lever all the way in slowly, tighten the bolt back up and repeat don't pump it just pull it in and tighten. If there was enough air in it they may have to rebleed the calipers. I could use 1 finger braking with mine to slow and 2 to stop hard,(with my other fingers still wrapped around the grip), so they shouldn't be like they are.

Thanks guys, my recollection was that this had been done without any problems. I reckon the system isn't bled properly myself, although they have changed brake lines and stuff before without any dramas.

I will give the guy a few pointers and see how he goes.

I agree that the master cylinder is probably air-locked. But my point was, fix that and you still have an unmatched brake system.

Find out what size bore the MC on the donor bike uses, and just get one. Bleeding is only half the solution.

Yeah, I agree with you. If it was my bike that is what I would be doing.
