55 vs 50 series rear tire?
So shopping again for a rear tire. I found a great deal on a 190/55 instead of a 190/50 like I am running now.
5mm of sidewall cant cause that much mayhem can it? Anyone have any hands on experience? |
Yeah, remember nath? If you search I'm sure it'll come up. He was a big proponent... Used to get in some good discussions.
|
I just read up on the interweb about it. Seems like all positive reviews and the one I found was a great deal. $112 to my door for a Dunlop roadsmart 2.
Reviews to follow. I expect quicker turn in at least. |

I've been researching info on the 190/55 vs. 190/50 because the previous owner of the Duc has a 50 on it, but OE is 55. |
Shoot, I guess all Nath's arguments were 180 vs 190. I jumped the gun on my reply. Most of what I've read on the Duc forum has noted slower turn in on the 50. It's all I've known to this point but next season I will go back to the 55.
EDIT: also comments that you get to the edge of the tire sooner(on the 50). Not my experience but a general consensus over on the other board. |
Seems the wave of the future.
|
55 Shouldn't be a problem, it may change the speeding read a tiny bit, that's all.

That really depends on the tire profile if it's more rounded of more aggressive oval and the manufacturer, they have some variations even if it's the same specs. |
I know on the track that the bigger size tends to triangulate the tire slightly which means greater mid corner stability and grip at the loss of turn in stability.
Not going to be a factor in January commuting through NYC. |

Tire Aspect ratio is not a direct measurement.

5mm of sidewall cant cause that much mayhem can it? Anyone have any hands on experience? The "50 or 55" is the aspect ratio between width and sidewall not a direct measurement. 190/50 ...the sidewall is 50% of the tire width so 75mm tall. 190/55... the sidewall is 55% of the tire width so 82.5mm tall all of that ONLY if the tire is mounted on a recommended rim width ... Change the rim width (like when a wider tire is mounted on a narrower rim then recommended..a common mistake) the effective sidewall height will increase, and the width will sometimes decrease. |
I am willing to test it, since its already ordered. I have a backup rear rim with a Dunlop Q3 on it. The preferred tire for half wet half dry on the racetrack. I feel like its too hard to be good in winter.
I rode only race takeoffs for years in NYC winters but had a few close calls with slides front and rear so switched to the roadsmarts. My only concern now is swingarm clearance. |

my 1098 came with the oe 190/55. when it wore out i replaced it with a 190/50. that was a long time ago and i do not recall the handling difference. either i have a bad memory, the difference was insignificant, or my riding skills are too obtuse to be able to notice. i lean to the latter as i do recall wider chicken strips on the 190/55. lol:p |

Not 5mm difference, 7.5mm if it matters to you.

Or, 5.5mm more than stock. Still not using common core. |

Or, 5.5mm more than stock. Still not using common core. 180/55-17 STOCK = 99mm high sidewall . 190/50-17 Tire he is running NOW 95mm sidewall or 4mm LOWER than stock . 190/55-17 Tire he is wanting to run 104.5mm or 5.5mm Taller than stock or 9.5mm Taller than what he is running now. |
My speedo is off a good 8mph. Hate that even though I know it.

So a 190/55 has to be larger circumference than stock right? No matter what?
Here is where I bought it. 190/55ZR-17 Dunlop RoadSmart II Sport Touring Radial Rear Tire | eBay |

Just being a dick. That last one should be "TALLER" & "taller". |

I was reading here
https://www.tacomaworld.com/tirecalc...5r17-190-55r17 I own a speedo healer but never put it on. It is offset by gearing as well so there is a break even point. Plus 1.7% is way off little to care. I don't ride where speed matters much. |
The 1.7% difference (with stock gearing) would make the speedo more accurate.
|
Yeah, but if you are going 100 and it says 101.7, do you care?

Where Joe's riding, he don't need roads.
|
I really wouldn't advise that tire for winter snow/ice conditions... It's unsafe. You have a kid to think about now, changes everything.
|
Roadsmarts are actually highly rated for bad weather. High silica compound. I used to ride only race take offs (aforementioned). This is a big step up.

For those really Bad Days

Smoking's bad weather tire.

I actually thought of making some of those for icy days but figured they would self destruct if I wound up on pavement for any length of time.
