190 /50/ 17 Tyre
 

Does anybody know if it is ok to put a 190/50/17 tyre on a VTR 1000F?

I know it's best to go by the book/manual and put the 180/55/17 but I found a pretty good 190/50/17 tyre and I was wondering how much would this tyre affect the bike's overall handling (and where exactly,cornering,leaning,etc).

welcome to the forum! I mistakenly installed a 190/50 on 5.5'' aftermarket rim with faulty paperwork(specified that rim was 6") that threw me off initially. Not recommended if you lean aggressively. Squeezing the 190 onto the 5.5" rim is doable but changes the arc making it steeper on the edges. The tire slid out several times well before reaching the tire edge. If you don't ride aggressively, you can install without issue and it looks pretty cool. I removed my BTO-16 before it had 1100 miles on it and it's sitting in the garage. To the contrary, I imagine that if you ride really aggressively as in supermoto style backing it in with low sliding, it might work, but I haven't been able to learn this technique yet.:D:D

It`ll fit (while ideally a 190 tires should be on a 6-inch rim, it can be put on a 5.5-inch with no problem or inherent danger). Having tried it myself, I would not recommend it. The flatter 50 profile (which does round out slightly due to the narrower rim) slows down the steering, particularly mid-corner (or half-way through the lean). Why pay more money for slower handling? That said, it`s all up to you....

I would stick with the 180. You'll get better all around traction and handling. Unless you are just going for the big tire look...but even then, the 190 won't look THAT much bigger than the 180 since its being pinched.

my bike came with a 190 rear on it, never ridden with a 180 but as far as I can tell the 190 rode real good for me, was able to lean as much as needed kinda makes me wonder how an angled I can get with a 180

i ran a 190 dunlop n-tec ( at the track ) and thought it was great. i couldn't tell the difference in turn in... but i run a steering damper. i bought it as a take-off so i haven't tried a 180. ( the r6 guys with the 5.5" run the 190 so there is a better selection vs 180 )

the dunlop 190/55 is rated to fit a 5.5" tire.

the dunlop has a pretty stiff carcass so it doesn't 'grow' much, i wouldn't put a pirelli 190 as that tire has more flex.

i believe the angle of lean achievable for me on the street may be the same with both, however it seems that I could get closer to the tire edge with the 180 at the same lean angle. Also, the 180 felt more predictable and confidence inspiring in that I felt more planted on the edge with the 180 on a 5.5" First pic is 180, second 190, both on 5.5" rims. I ride the same roads most often so I'm familiar with the roads and therefore lean angles have remained rather constant.

I ran a 180 when i first got my hawk, then scored a free set of tires. The rear was a 190. I hated it at first, but then after 6 or 700 miles I started to get used to it and actually liked it better after that. It changes the handling characteristics something wicked.... can you run a 190 on stock rim.... yes u can.
