01+ model tank on early model

Hey.

I have a 98 VTR and need to find out the ins and outs of fitting the F1 onwards model 19litre tank as opposed to the FW model 16 litre tank.

I believe it bolts straight on but requires the fuel tap from the early tank as the later taps foul the airbox.

I have had a brief search around, but after wading through VFR tank mods, can't find what I'm looking for.

Any assistance in what I need to do it and any specific problem areas greatly appreciated.

If you know any older threads covering it, a linky will do nicely.

Thanks

Well the thing is, here in the USA the tank size never changed.. We are stuck with the small one for all years. But it should be an easy swap.

I posted it here I as know for sure some of you folks have done it.

I know the bigger tanks are a rarity over there, but more people have done the mod than over here... wierd.

The US never had the 19 litre tank. Any conversions you have read about used custom tanks or VFR tanks.

Only the European market received models with 19 litre tanks. So you need to talk to someone from one of those markets, that has done the conversion already, and knows what parts you need.

So that would be me then.

You will need:

Fuel tap - mounts to the frame, not the tank.
Fuel hose from tank to tap
Fuel hoses from each carby to the fuel tap

I think that is it from memory. The fuel tap is easy to mount, and you will not need new bars or airbox. Fairly straight forward swap really.

Sweet!

Thanks shayne.

(beautiful storm btw :) )

Hi all, first post here. I read some time ago that the reason for the smaller tank in the US was that a larger airbox was needed to reach our horsepower hungry customer base's desired number. The larger euro spec tank may not fit properly over the US airbox if what I read is correct. Can't cite a source, it was a long time ago that I read this.

I have done the swap, the airbox is not an issue.

bluesman 04-25-2007 02:31 AM

done that

I've done swap. Airbox is same size. You need 01+ tank with 01+ fuel tap with fuel tap bracket, 01+ fuel lines and +/- 80 cm long hose to replace pre-01 small vacuum hose that goes to fuel tap.
Bolts straight on. 200 km till reserver mixed spirited riding + 46 km on reserve.
Best ever - 280 km till empty tank with usual riding.
