Welcome to the show

Hey Greenwood98SH. Welcome. Yea, there are a few of us in the Portland/Vancouver 'n' Beaverton area.
I read your other posts that you made - how did your valve noise turn out?
Tell us some more about your ride, its previous owner history and its mods' etc.

jbaxx Jun 30, 2009 03:03 PM

I lived in Bend about 30 years ago. Does that count??

greenwood98sh Jun 30, 2009 11:32 PM

well i took it bACK TO THE DEALer and had the mech who did the valve job ride it again an he said that its more than likely the cam chain making the noise but he said that it was nothing to worry about but its pretty loud to me especially when i am taking off from a light but after you get into a cruise speed it quiets down alittle. so i don't know what to do i am pretty mechanically inclined but that timing chain stuff freaks me out alittle. thats why i was wondering if any body here lived in oregon somewhere near salem so maybe i could ask their advise or help. the bike is a 98 sh with two brothers high mount exhaust k&n and thats about all i can see so far i don't know who the previous owner was but he or she put it down because there are scratches in the plastic a dent in the tank and scratches on the pipe the bike has almost 30000 on it and seems to run really well

Beaverton here as well.

Spaz' Jul 1, 2009 04:07 AM

I think one of the first things someone around here might start telling someone with a previous to 2001 Superhawk, having as many miles as yours has, and noises of any sort in the cam chain and/or valve area (Even after a valve lash check and adjustment.), is to make sure you have a manual cam chain tensioner installed.
But a listen in on the engine in person by someone is recommended as well for a second opinion. I have a 2001 and have no previous experience with cam chain noise and cam chain tensioner breakage, or replacement etc.; so this is just my experience with my own ride.
A mechanics stethescope (S?) can come in handy too. I got mine for a couple of bucks from Harbor Freight.

I agree with Spaz, I would get a set of manual tensioners ordered because even if you don't have a cct problem the paranoia will kill you. When they come I will help you install them. I have done mine before so I am familiar with the proceeder. Also I would refrain from riding it until you fix the cct's, its not worth the risk of blowing your top end. $80 Ape cc't (or trucinducs) vs $1000+ fix if you let it go. See what I mean. Let me know when you need my help.

Where you at? Welcome to the forum...:D

jefejrs Jul 1, 2009 11:22 PM

I agree. Do the manual CCt's. I did not have a problem but it is well worth the piece of mind. Thanks for the welcome cornandp. Wealth of knowledge in here.

I lived in Blue River for about 3 years. My youngest child was born in Eugene back in 1992. Actually, my wife and son are on their summer vacation as i type this and are heading to Oregon for a week.

One more in SE PDX. Funny I haven't visited this site in a year but found this post looking for a chain recommendation. I used to work on my SH a ton but just quit and started riding it. I had a guy at St. John's honda replace my CCT's with OEM when this site got me paranoid a while back. It still makes noise but I can barely hear it over the other ticks and clicks, or over my Erion pipes.

The Beaverton doesn't count comment made me laugh outloud, thanks for that one.

poppazuti Jul 30, 2009 08:26 AM

One more in Corvallis. Listen to the advice and change the cct's.

Pimpster you count. I visited Chris at Cycletune just today to order up some stuff. A friend referred me and I didn't know he had a SH. He's a good guy and knows his way around the bike. Good resource and seems like a good guy.
