what gear to keep cold off my neck?

I have been riding all summer with no issues, but my leather jacket and helmet leave a gap at my neck.

Its 30 degrees in the AMs now, and I keep getting a sore throat.

What can I do to fill that gap... gotta be something better looking out there than a scarf?

Visit your local ski shop and pick up neckwarmer, you can probably find them in wool or even gortex/polypropoline (I use them for cycling). It's either that or start wearing turtlenecks to work every day!

scarface 10-03-2008 01:53 PM

Thanks, Ill look into that... no NERDlenecks for me :)

A scarf, or muffler, is it. In my old age I've gotten soft and don't ride if it's in low '40s. But years ago I would wear long underwear, winter gloves and a muffler or scarf and still arrive at work numb.

I almost forgot, a hoodie works well too, as long as it fits under your jacket with the hood sticking out the back.

i was just at my local shop this afternoon and they had a neoprene gaitor thingy designed specifically for moto riders. I'll take a look when i pass through this weekend and see if i cant get the name of the thing. i'm thinking of picking one up myself seeing as riding on fall mornings in new england tend to be less than warm.

L8RGYZ 10-03-2008 02:29 PM

I got the neoprene that covers the cheeks & part of the neck. Been using it for several years & works great.

I also have a micro-fleece neck gaiter that has velcro on it. It fill up the space between neck & collar well.

I use a balaclava. It keeps the neck warm and takes off the windchill.

I too use the balaclava. Try one, you'll like it. Mine was 20 bucks at the local bike shop. It's neoprene around the head so it fits under the helmet comfy. From under the nose down it's made of thick fleece that totally blocks the wind from your neck and lower face.

+1...balaclava are simple and effective and they don't make your helmet fit any different as they are pretty thin (but still warm)

nuhawk 10-03-2008 03:15 PM

I used a balaclave until Oz Firestorm had an ad for a "Neck Sock". It's like what you would expect in a yankee sock hat - but it's tube. Unlike a tight fitting balaclava it fits loosely and makes a great transition from the helmet to the jacket. Hot bikes in Texas cold is a good thing.

I bought a face warmer thing off ebay for ten bux shipped. Ill give it a shot and if it wont do the job, Ill try out some of the other ideas.

Don't laugh, I've used the sleeves off of white T-shirts before. Believe it or not they work.......to a point.

scarface 10-03-2008 03:53 PM

I could see that. Im willing to try anything. My dakota gets 13MPG, so I need to ride as much as possible.

I use one of those. I've ridden with it all the way from 25 to 50 with no problems. Love it! Got it at the local Cycle Gear.

thanks guys, lots of ideas for me to try :)

Like some others have recommended, try a bicycle shop. The stuff you'll find there will layer better and be less bulky. Get yourself a set of arm and leg warmers. They can help you stay much warmer in casual pants and not require you to do a lot of clothes changing once you're at work.

scarface 10-04-2008 09:34 AM

Thanks!

under armor

I did a tour in afghanistan as a gunner. Riding in the hatch for 12+ hours in -10 degree weather I tested alot of different things to keep warm. My favorite pick was the cold weather Under Armor baclava. Its nice because it has a mouth cover that you can easily fold down. Trust me it works.

+1 on the balaclava's. check out www.cheaperthandirt.com for good military surplus stuff for cold weather and also the bargain cave at www.cabelas.com they have several levels of under armour bala's as well as some non-name brands. plus they have some really good cold weather neck wear in the hunting clothes section. hope it helps.

I just got bikers BALACLAVA comfort-TEX Series at Iron Pony $19.95.

I used to ride in So Cal and never used one of these, but it seems working Central Ohio weather. It make it very comfortable riding low 40's to low 50' temp with windy condition.

very nice material inside and fits very well on me.

Leather track pants and windproof base layer do job for me, now.
I also got glove liner (running glove?) too.

My wife, who are born and raised in San Diego, thinks I am crazy to ride like that...
