Tank Bag Recomendation?
 

Hey guys,

I did a search, but couldn't find anything. One of the reasons I got the VTR is to do light touring. My Stealth bags don't seem to fit right and I lost the straps to my tank bag, so I'll be in the market for a magnetic job in the future. Is anyone absolutely sold on a particular model / make for the SH? The tanks looks like it will be great for something wide-ish...

Your thoughts?

I have one made by Tour Master, and it'll hold a good amount of gear. I had a pair of running shoes, t-shirts, socks, and drawers for 3 days, a long-sleeve t-shirt for cooler weather, a pair of armored mesh gloves, my Kimber 1911 + spare mag, and assorted granola bars in this one (as pictured). There is also a circumferential zipper that allows another 2" of storage space, but I didn't need to use it. It is okay for sedate riding with the expansion up and filled, and okay for moderate to mildly aggro riding w/ the expansion zipped closed. I can also highly recommend the Axio tailbag pictured, it fits the bike well and holds a reasonable amount of gear, plus has the 'emergency bungee net' for impromptu extra storage.

I have one of similar size as that, but not Tour Master branded.. Was purchased at Bobs Cycle Supply in MN.

The SH tank is nice and flat, and will accommodate just about any tank bag.

i have a nelon riggs. the magnet came out on one of the pockets and they replaced it free. excellant warranty

I have a joe rocket tankbag. it works great. no complants. its pretty big, magnetic, and comes with a nylon shell for rainy days. it also has clear plastic on top for maps. and so does the rainshell.

Has a lot of bags specifically set up for the Superhawk. Tank bags and seat saddles. I am looking at a couple of them for a tour too.

I'd recommend any Nelson Rigg bag... they've treated me very well.

I've been using the Nelson Rigg MG950K. Not too big, not too small, and super strong magnets.

i have a bags connection type ( link was posted above by ttocsmai) for another bike and it is great. they quick connect to a mount you put around the gas tank filler mounting points - rock solid and on off about as quick as a magnetic bag.
I have a small magnetic one I used on the SH - but,,,,,, its small. at high speeds (85+) its not reliable to stay put, so figure how you ride. I also have a tail pack that is much more secure and holds more. I suppose a bigger bag would have more magnets but I wouldn't trust it if you riding fast.

Hmm, mine (I think it is a Rapid Transit, can check when I get home if anyone actually cares) will stay on at any speed with just the magnets, even fully expanded.

edit: it has a clip that could be used to keep it from falling off should the magnets slip, but I don't bother with that anymore.

My comment about 'okay for spirited riding' was more about being able to shift around it rather than it coming off. I've had zero issues with slippage, but with the bag expanded it's harder to shift my upper body from side to side and get in 'normal' position for knee-out fast corners.

I like the looks of that Rapid Transit Bag. I'm off for an overnight tomorrow and had to use a cargo net to hold everything down. I sold a Nelson Riggs and Tourmaster mag tank bags when I got the M2 so I'm sort of screwed ATM. (DOH!)

Used to be I'd bungee 50lbs of crap to a bike and just go, but these days I feel absolutely dainty by comparison. I'll be worried about my stuff for the first five hours or so anyhow. Ug.

I also like the tail pack Galaxieman had on his bike. The only issue is the length of my tent. I need to be able to pack that somehow OR become well enough off so I don't need to sleep out ;)

The Rapid Transit is the best bang for the buck...just look at the price. Super strong and well made. All it lacks is a carry handle for in-hand use when off the bike. I made an impromptu handle from a piece of webbing and a fas-tex buckle that I ran through the D-ring on one end of the bag. I also attach this strap to the top triple tree as a last resort if the magnets should slip.

Using the tailbag I've got, you could use the bungee net to secure the tent crosswise behind you. A little 550-cord as a security measure tied to each end and you should be good to go. I've got a '2-man' (read: 2 Cub Scouts or 1 full-sized human) tent that is about 20-24" long when packed, and I wouldn't have any qualms strapping that down with the bungee.

Back from the overnight. The nets worked well enough, but I ended up catching a hook across my face while strapping my dry bag down. DOH!

Yep, I'm going to get that tail pack and Rapid Transit tank bag when finances allow. It's all about priorities right now. I was going to look around for VFR bars next, but after this trip I'm thinking I can make due with the low bars for now and the seat is perfect compared to my Buell's...

('course I need to figure out if I'm running the OEM rectifyer or not. The bike is just about where these fail -- 22k.)

I should sell the strap tank bag and stealth bags to see what I can get, I guess.

I use a magnetic Cortec(tourmaster) tank bag. Works well for what I want from a tank bag. Not too big and not too small.

Joe Rocket Manta...you wont find a better tank bag for $50.00!

Good looking, well made and proportionally sized large tank bag for the VTR. Great features like an expansion zipper and conversion to a backpack. Canvas material is thinner than my very old Bagman tank bag, but after a pretty hard season on use there are no seam or zipper or falling apart issues. Highly recomended.

I have a set of NelsonRigg Silver Streak luggage. With the tankbag from the set fully extended at straight and level the bag touches my forearms. If you're carrying this kind of volume (tents? - really?) kneedraggin' better be a small part of the day. I could get off if I had to but I'd be monkey-huggin' for the far clipon.

Never touched a knee down on the street, never tried.

This is the one I have. You can see with it filled it's above the windscreen. Like I said - straight and level it hits my forearms almost up to my elbow.

Im highly recommend the Motocentric tank bag.
Well built. Magnet holds true. Tons of compartments. Backpack ready too.
Has map window and holds a good amount of stuff. Fits the bike nice too.

I have the saddlebags, not the tank bag, but I wanted to weigh in on Motocentric. I think their stuff is awesome too.

+1 on the rapid transit. It was a great value and it is well made. The magnetic recon19 is just big enough for my smallish laptop. Magnet system is perfectly secure and very convenient

Had mine for a decade and good as new but needs a tank cover as well. (adv protects tank and stops bag flying off!)

I like the versatility of the Icon Urban Tank Bag. I've had one since '04 and nothing has yet to tear. It's not the biggest bag out there, but being able to convert it into a book bag has been great.

EDIT: It has a strap you can attach to the bike as a fail safe, though I've never had a problem.
