Helmet Ventilation

When I bought my current helmet about 6 months ago I got a really good deal...so I thought. The problem was at that time it was basically winter so I didn't need a lot of air flow. Now it's summer in the Deep South and in the 90's everyday and my helmet seems to suck donkey balls with air flow/ventilation. What are your opinions on helmets/models with good ventilation??

SPRHK 06-08-2010 12:16 PM

I own 2 brands of helmets. Arai and Scorpion. THey both have very good ventilation.

Old Yeller 06-08-2010 12:39 PM

what helmet did you get?

cliby 06-08-2010 12:46 PM

Excellent helmet review including ventiallation ratings. Otherwise its a guess. I hear the latest shoeis are great. I have the new corsairV and at high speeds great at low sppeds nothing special.

I have a new Shoei X-Twelve, and I love it...good air flow. I've owned 4 Arais over the last 25+ years, and my latest, an RX-7 Corsair, vents well also.

Those are all great helmets and most of them are expensive. I've done some experimenting and found the HJC IS-16 an excellent compromise. It isn't super quiet but pretty good for the price. It also has an retractable smoked visor (like a pilot's helmet) that allows you to flip up the visor at slower speeds. The built in ventilation is also pretty good. The cheapest I found it was New Enough.

my old rx7rr3 was a nice helmet but i felt it didn't live up to the hype, or price. it vented ok.
on an impulse i bought a gmax 68. it vents very well and was cheap. good value. check the reviewon web bike world.

+1 on the rf-1000 have one work great.. extremely light..no neck pain :)

malahhaor 06-08-2010 06:06 PM

I would disagree on the RF-1000, owned one for 4 years, thought it was good since it was my first helmet, but i was always sweating in it like a pig. It also gave me headaches when on highway because of low frequencies wind booming noise. Did a little research and got me an AGV T2 last week before the superbike in Wisconsin, 500 miles later kicking my self for not doing it sooner. No booming noise, and ventilation is so good i feel the wind gliding all across the top of my head. Just wonderful.
But that's my .02

these have excellent ventilation

seriously there are lots of tested helmets and ratings out there. opinions are really subjective on this. do some research - there are really good options

You should probably re-read previous post... Nobody said the RF-1000... There is a pretty big difference between the RF-1000 and the RF-1100... Complete re-design...

HJC CL14 works good for me but kinda loud or maybe it's time to repack the Jardine's.......

Tweety, have a look at post #11 (Doomcookie). This is what Malahhaor is refering too. ;)

Agreed!

motojoe 06-09-2010 07:30 AM

I have a Shoei X-11 and love it. Shoei has updated the RF1000 to a RF1100 and the X-11 to an X-12. Both have better venting than their previous models.

My son had one too. poor quality. HJC is pretty easy to find and some of their lower end lines are reasonable price. they move air fairly well at a small pricetag.

I have an Icon Perimeter, excellent ventilation, quiet and light.

I think thats the direction i will be heading. all the reviews I've read and opinions from some folks on the other forum I visit (katriders.com) point towards HJC being a very quality helmet for a reasonable price.....I may also look at the Belle Arrow

the1bolton 06-12-2010 07:15 PM

Note that I have only owned one helmet, an HJC (sorry, I have forgotten the model and I'm not near it. It is a full face about 2 years old). It makes an incredible amount of wind noise on the highway with the only solution being ear plugs. Air flow has never been an issue for me, I live in New England (although I feel like it isn't that amazing). Unfortunately I don't know if this noise is the helmet or the bike (or if another helmet would be better).

As a general side note I have always been sensitive to loud noises and I can't stand loud mufflers on my bike (I swapped mine back to stock a while back and am MUCH happier).
