I was watching the race yesterday when that happened, Race 1. They only replayed it once that I saw. That's why I always check the axle nut torque as soon as I get home, after getting new tires. They more often than not over-torque it. I've decided to buy a front stand, so I can do the R&R myself from now on, since the last time they torqued the front axle to over 90 ft lbs...spec is 43.

I'm just glad the rider was okay. And I hope the pit guy who installed that wheel got the ax, or at least a severe tongue lashing.

My apologies to the pit guy. On second viewing, it is obvious at the end that the wheel rim separated from the hub. How the hell did that happen?:shock: Major torque delivery.

I'm still getting a front stand though, so I can pull my own wheels. I already have a rear stand. The techs at the dealership suck.

Anybody remember the Forum member who had his front wheel come loose while riding home from a tire install a couple of years ago?

And that axle nut does look sufficiently torqued to me.

I think I'm probably going to stick to my stockers for now...

When making extremely light high strength things like race wheels, it doesn't take much damage or manufacturing fault to allow this to happen.

magnesium wheels have a limited life cycle.
he used them once to often.
they will and do develop cracks,just glad it wasnt at high speed!

Not the first time this has happened with magnesium wheels, I was at the TT when this happened. Robert was very seriously hurt, he was out of racing for two years.

Yeah, they have their benefits, but im glad the magnesium wheels i had on mine were taken off before it was too late.

So this plus 2 races with a bunch of tire failures. Weird season already.

Loose wheel nut can cause excessive vibration and stress fracture the weak points.

The video needs sub titles. I couldn't understand a thing those guys were saying. LOL.
Super light weight, race only, very limited production. Flaw in the metal in one of the spokes? Weakest link sorta thing? Oh yeah, lots of torque too.
I'm guessing that OZ would prefer not to have their logo on that pic of the sheared wheel.
