This is why legislation is so relevant. The common person thinks if its legal, it must be good/smart/right.

Now they just have to lower the no helmet law to 18, which will reduce the likelihood of them having reproduced.

I've cracked two helmets racing MX and one mountain bike riding. First time I ever (seriously) crashed on the street I was eighteen, no helmet, did a flying loop over the hood of a car that turned left in front of me and almost landed on my feet. I figured I'd only get one lucky break and started wearing a helmet on the street...

Helmets and a full one I may add, saved me several times, not going to details, but if not the helmets I wouldn't be here today to write about it!

I don't get it. I NEVER ride without a helmet. It is the one part of me that I know can't be fixed if damaged. I have ended up on my face after a crash and will be forever grateful to my old Nava full face helmet.

Back in the day we had a customer come in the shop and inquire about a new muffler for his Triumph. It was all scratched up from a recent fall. My boss pointed to his full face helmet and asked "did you see that?" Across the forehead portion of the helmet was a very deep gash. His "wreck" was a minor spill on some gravel and he could have been left brain damaged if he had no helmet.

You can say all this and still the fools will ride with with rags wrapped around their heads for protection.

I feel naked if I don't have full gear. Makes me feel very ready to become hamburger meat. Something I like to avoid.

Perhaps I'm in the minority here, but I don't believe in legislating safety at the individual level. I always wear a helmet and a seat belt and, like Joe, I feel naked without them, but I wear them by choice. Sometimes, freedom and stupid don't mix, but I'll accept the dangers and I reserve the right to make my own mistakes, even if one of those mistakes ends me.

I would agree on most of that if not for the social cost of the stupidity. The cost of first responders, medical cost, etc. is huge on the community at large.

I'm guessing motorcyclists generate a disproportionate social cost as compared to cagers. Even when wearing proper safety gear.

It would be nice if we didn't have to be legislated, especially with the amount of law in the US that is completely out of proportion! I wish all people had the personal responsibility as you and most members here I believe.
But in reality, a large percentage of the population in this country is not and need a system.

The danger is the new legislation that strives for a "zero fatality goal". NYC mayor is adopting the system out of Europe. Trying to legislate all risk out of transport.

This means cars that drive for you and eventual elimination of bikes since they create risk.

If that is the direction, then we do need to fight helmet laws, the slope is slippery past that.

As I mentioned, we have way too many rules and regulations in this country.
Mark my words: There will be allot more rules and regulations to come if we allow attorneys to run this country!

There need to be more scientists involved in legislation, not lawyers!

Not a good idea. Scientists always think their laws are universal and immutable.

I think the largest part of science, is the willingness to accept new data and logical arguments as true when proven, regardless of prior opinion on a topic. Perhaps we just need more people like that
