I know it comes up from time to time so I weighed some wheel parts while working out how to swap in an RC51 rear wheel I have. Compared to the stock SH rear wheel
Stock wheel with disc = 17.5 pounds
Stock with cush/steel sprocket/disc = 25 pounds

RC51 wheel (SP2) with disc= 14 pounds
RC51 wheel with cush/steel sprocket/disc = 18 pounds

those are just using a digital bathroom scale so maybe total weight is +/- 0.5 pounds

Pretty good savings in weight.

For what its worth, the rim/disc (no cush drive) of the 900RR wheel which some put on as a 6-spoke match to an SP1 front, is the same weight as the SH, perhaps 0.5 pound heavier. Don't know about the cush drive.

Thanks Bill. Now I don't have to weigh my SP2 wheel..... Think I'll notice the 3.5 lbs difference in the front wheel..... :D

Sorry people to bring this one up again, but seems like everyone does a 900 or f3-2 wheels swap. So the qeustion is whats gonna take me to swap rc rear wheel into my SH ? Wheel comes complete with rotor and spocket.

From my understanding and searching of the forums, it won't fit stock without rubbing.

The easy solution is to find a SP2 (2002-2006) swingarm and transplant it. There is a recent thread about this.

Then you could use the SP2 wheel or a 600/1000 wheel.

Just to be clear, we are speaking strictly of the rear wheel here or both (ie. the top number the front and the bottom one the rear)? Assuming they are all rear wheel weights, there is a dramatic difference the weight of the cush drive unit between the VTR and RC....

That is what I thought too but a comment from Mike (8541Hawk) has left me wondering, so better to ask the question....

BTW, from info I found on another site (http://www.rc51.org/wheel.htm; mind you, there is no way of knowing if this is SP1 or SP2 data), my PVM rear is about 5 lb lighter yet than the RC wheel, so a total weight saving of around 12 lbs for just the wheel. Throw in 1 lb less for machined rotor, another lb or so for 520 pitch aluminum rear sprocket and you`re up to about 14 lbs ... :)

Dang, its nice set of rims you got. So with PVM you dont need no mods to swing arm, correct?

Mine are 900RR rims (6" wide though, just like RC), same as those in the pic (although mine have been powdercoated red). They were a straight bolt-on although I needed one additional 22mm spacer on the sprocket side (if I rmember correctly)

sorry I missed some of these questions. the weights I posted are rear only. front is similar savings.

There is a lister here with a long thread on modifying RC wheels to fit into the superhawk - it primarily required getting different bearings with the RC OD and the SH ID and a bit more fiddling. But it worked. I can not remember the details, but here is the thread.

yes the cush drives were impressively different between the two rims - its as though on the SH they were not even trying to save weight - I'm sure just an evolution in thinking toward light-ness and its importance. The handlebars unit on my 1100F from 1983 weighed nearly 5 pounds!

Alright, i guess im not ready for it right now (rc wheel swap), so im gonna stick with 900RR and save up for aftermarket set for later on;)
