Whats the Right sprocket size?
Hi guys, brand new to the site, just picked up an '01 Superhawk last week 100% stock, first twin and absolutley love it. Im very performance minded, and love to wheelie, and this 16-41 setup is NOT working. Ive been researching a little and it seems the best set up is a 15-43 do any of you guys ride with this? How is it? Would a 15-45 be too much? Im looking to be able get her up in 2nd without relying on the clutch too much. Thanks

Depending on how much you weigh, here are my suggestions. I am assuming you have been riding for a while. I weigh around 225 lbs and I have the 16/43 setup and it clutches easy in second. Now, if you don't want clutching, I suggest the 15/43 setup. Anything lower than that and you will be running crazy rpms on the highway.

I'm 170lbs running 16/43 and it seems to be great for me. The superhawk clutches are pretty tuff so I don't mind using it. |

Why change the gearing, learn to use the clutch and you don't need to change the gearing. Of course as a long long time dirt bike rider clutch slipping is a learned art and easier to learn in the dirt and transfer to street riding than starting cold turkey. Mine will even come up in 3rd when the air is clean. |
I am running 15-42. -1+1. My fat ass wieghs 250 lb.s and my hawk will power wheelie 2nd like crazy.

Where did you guys buy your sprockets from? What's a good brand of sprocket and chain?

Just wondering. By changing the sprocket sizes your speedometer won't read true right?

Correct

A speedo healer can fix the error though.

I have 15/44 and love it

I installed the 43 tooth rear today for a 16/43 setup. It is basically perfect and due to the rear wheel being moved forward it handles dramatically different. I highly recommend a short wheel base with lower gearing, it really comes alive.

AV Ive already scoped a nice kit with the 16/43 sprockets in a 530 pitch and chain. I'll be ordering soon. 👍 |
I just went from 15/43 to 15/45. Had to add a chain link. Speedo is way off now but torque is awesome. I use my Dyna Lowrider for highway trips and the Hawk for my around town wheelie machine.

Thought this was an informative article regarding the SH and modern bikes
SH acceleration |
Good article thanks. There have been discussions on here (years ago) about this. My belief is that lower gearing increases acceleration but some on here argued they could just downshift for the same results but that just isnt true or thousands of racers are all mistaken and regearing for no reason. These and all bikes are geared for EPA sound regulations at I think 50 mph so geared insanely tall.
