Turbo Q's
1 Attachment(s)
IF I wanted to turbocharge my SH is it possible to keep the boost low enough to prevent any damaging conditions?
I DO NOT want to deal with EFI, or Computer mapping... I have seen some turbocharger kits on a Buell, and Harley's before. That helps my case a bit because they were still carburated, and running low enough boost to prevent detonation and too much HP gain for the engine internals. Ideas on how I might be able to pull this off without doing too many weird things to the SH such as running crazy plumbing all over the place? Could I generate enough head pressure with just one header perhaps? |
Honestly after I have been trough the huge brainstorm of building one, EFI win by far.
Carburated turbos usually run like crap, big flat spots from rich spots impossible to tune since carbs use velocity and not density to measure airflow, in clear they don't "see" boost, pressure force the fuel backward in the tank, making a fuel pump a necessity, you need both headers. The "easiest" thing I could imagine is to swap a Varadero engine, complete with EFI in the Hawk and use a rising rate fuel pressure regulator to compensate for boost, that would work under 6 psi since there is no boost retard, but will still be less than optimal. After I have spent over 200 hours on this, 2000 $, I can say that it's a bigger project than slapping a turbo on a bike and should not be attempted without the proper ressources and a heck of a lot of DIY, otherwise the value of the mods will beat the price of the bike two or threefold. You need to : Build oil lines with retrictor weld oil return Build a stainless headers Make the 1 3/4 turbo flange (not sold) build the low pressure exhaust Build the induction system/plenum (plastic airbox won't hold) Build the enrich system Build the charge pipe Make a BOV fitting Make some throttle cables if induction system is different Relocate everything moved to make room for pipes and components Tear in the carbs countless times to find out that it need EFI Build EFI, yeah it's a PITA, but it's great In case you missed it https://www.superhawkforum.com/forum...ad.php?t=18880 Oh and for the picture, don't assume that if someone does something, it works, specially on the Harley crowd where the intellectual elite is no majority. First I see an Aerodyne turbo, the company is bankrupt for good reasons and using a single cylinder is proving how far they would compromise for the look  |
You ask about going faster, quicker, after the weekend you've had? Your a new Superhawk owner, the kid on the Ninja - well, I will not lecture. Get better and the speed will come, once you can keep the hammer on all the time, then and only then are you ready for better equipment.
|
A good rider on a ninja 250 will beat a bad rider on a ZX14 or GSXR1000 etc. on anything but a straight line.
Want to be faster? Take lessons at your local track. |
maybe he just wants to turbo it because it would be cool and a great project
im sure you guys and i could all ride just as fast as we do on our hawks on a bike of lesser performance, unless you have your hawk on the absolute limit all the time this will be the case. so by your logic we shouldnt even have bought 1000cc bikes |
Check out gboezio's turbo thread and see if you still want to tackle a turbo. Not for the faint of heart.

Have you ever ridden a turbo'd bike? I have, and if you only ride in a straight line, its a blast. But if you twist it hard at the apex of a corner, its a different story. The tubro lag will bite you in the ass.
If you keep your SuperHawk above 5k or 6k rpm in the twisties, I don't know why you would want more power. My friend with a 998 Ducati is impressed with the power of my bike. Most people riding liter bikes (myself included) can't use all the power available in the twisties anyway. If they could they'd be out there with Ben Spies and Haga. |
i wouldnt think of turboing my bike for riding it hard in the twisties or at all
i would just want to do it for the experience and fun of doing it, and having an interesting machine that would make people go WOW and also for the noise :D i think he wants to do it just cos it would be cool and no other reason, thats why i would lol |
I hear ya. Some can't guys can't just look at a bike without picking up a wrench.
But then there's the "Boss Hoss", with a cast iron 350 Chevy V8 between your legs. |

And get passed by a grannie. Will open thin thing on the track tough. |

For those of you who posted informative comments - Thanks, it helps a lot For those of you who posted "learn to ride" type of comments - Thanks, but thats not what I'm going for... I don't want to grind pucks... not my style. I live in a city with plenty more straights than twisties... so my priorities are different. I am not doing this for power... I have the itch to just have some greasy messy fun with the SH... but judging by what I'm seeing... it will have to be naturally aspirated fun... |
[QUOTE=FireRescue;232096]Why can't everyone see this lol...
that's a good question. To each his own and we should applaud diversity. :) |
Thanks nath...
I heard back from Aerochargers (the charger thats on that buell above) and they said that they would not be interested in doing a "one-off" kit for the SH... but if there was enough interest in the kits <whistles> then they might make a kit for the SH carburated... no EFI mess to deal with lol |

It's a win/win situation, you gain knowledge and a cool bike :D I can provide most of the infos on wiring, EFI, construction, but it will take a lot of welding and fabrication...sweat, bleeding knuckles, religious words, beer, patient womens  |
Don't touch an Aerocharger, ask the Miata guys why
A single cylinder turbo kit, carbureted is a recipe for disaster and poor performance, definitely engineered by idiots don't touch this, ever !! Edit: it seem that the Aerocharger have been redesigned and gained in reliability, so I won't comment until I get more input. |
