Suspension Settings
 

Hi Guys,

I just sold my 98 VFR and got a 98 VTR. Any suggestions on fork settings for mildly aggressive riding. I weigh 180-184 LBS. and have no clue what the base settings were from the factory. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks. Oh BTW I love the VTR. I had an RC51 SP2 before the VFR but the VTR will do. Until I can get a nice 02 or 04 RC again.

hey just a quick stab at this, as im not TOO expert on the superhawk suspension. mainly, its slightly over sprung for you on the rear. WAY undersprung in the front. you'd like have to run the preload nearly all the way in. valving/damping control is whatever with the suspension on this bike.

options are:
1) swap to 900rr forks
2) complete front end from 929/954/rc51
3) one of the above, and an aftermarket shock (ohlins, etc)
4) one of the above, and a jamie daugherty f4i modded shock

if i remember right, the rebound adjustment doesnt have TOO much affect, but i can still notice it. i run it rather unintrusive but id have to see how many turns out later on when i get home. fork springs would make a rather large difference as the forks were sprung for a 140lb rider.

ive only seen racetech springs and sonic springs. sonics are only $80 a set.

ill see if i can get a complete setting list for you later. i know for sure though that i have the preload all the way in (im 200lbs). rebound not so sure, and iirc theres no compression damping adjustability on this bike.

I had good results with just replacing the stock fork springs, with springs matched to my weight and fresh fork oil.

I did a quite a few tracks days like that, even the rear shock was ok. Worked good in the canyons. I had to rebuild my front forks a few times to get it right, but they are very simple to work on. Search this site lots of feedback. One thing I learned was that lighter weight fork oil worked better than heavier. I ended up with 5wt or 7.5wt if I recall.

No longer an issue for me now, as the new bike I bought had all the work done my Dan Kyle racing. Handles awesome.
