Stock Chain Question...
 

I am always asking questions and you guys are always there to help me! lol. I need to know how to tell the difference between a stock chain and a different one. Reason I ask, is I got my superhawk and the front sprocket was switched to a 15t and I want to buy a 16t or stock one, doesnt matter. and I want to make sure I buy the right one. I can take plenty of pics jsut let me know what you need and if you could educate me, I will listen! Thanks guys!

Not sure that I understand why it matters about the chain being stock or aftermarket. However, if you don't see a master link, then you probably have the original. I know that my 98 still does.

When you install the 16t sprocket you may find that you need a bigger chain, unless yours has enough slack to compensate. If you need a bigger chain, buy an aftermarket such as DID or RK.

Ok so all sprockets will fit the same chains? some chains are just better? I understand that some may need to be bigger, I think I have plenty of slack, just trying to work both angles for gas mileage and performance, and right now I need the mileage, I dont think a 16t sprocket will help a ton, but every little bit counts!

No there are different sizes and lengths. The stock chain size is 530 and the length is....... crap I forgot. 114 links? Help please!

If you want to change sprockets and/or chains they have to be the same size. In the VTR's case, your choice is either 520 or 530. A much bigger rear sprocket will require a longer chain with more links than stock to compensate for the larger circumference.

OEM chain is 102 links.

Most chains have there pitch (520,525.530...) stamped on one of links. You should check this to make sure some one has not put a conversion kit on the bike. Once you know that just order your sprocket. You may or may not need to order a new chain depending on how mush slack you have.

A 520 pitch chain requires 520 sprockets, front and rear. You can't use a 520 chain with 530 sprockets and vicy versy.:D 520 chains are lighter, so they conceivably give a very slight performance advantage, but I doubt you would even notice it. 520 chains and sprockets are cheaper than 530, but they wear faster.
Stock chain and sprockets are 530. Chain should be 102 links.
