Starting my mods
 
I have the opportunity to get a 954 front end setup for $450- everything included (forks, rotors, calipers, rim, triples and clip-ons)- from a local guy and the parts sound like they're clean.

First off, I am wondering if this is a decent price for this setup. I have been reading quite a bit of the posts and understand this to be an easy swap so am excited to give it a shot.

Second, I was wondering if anyone had opinions on changing the whole front end. I have only seen good reviews of this investment, but I am a relatively inexperienced rider (Inexperience= i'm not as picky as most of you guys are), and was also wondering if there are ANY drawbacks to doing this? From what I can tell, mechanically I am only looking at a couple of pinched radiator hoses at full turn. What I am wondering is if my distance touring abilities will be limited and that sort of thing. Eventually this bike will be a streetfighter, but want to start with a good base.

Last, are there any mechanical recommendations that anyone has while I am doing this? I've noticed a lot about All Balls bearings, and thinking about SS break lines and such.

That is a decent price.

It is fairly easy, you will have to shave the stops to get a reasonable turning radius (and then it will hit the hoses as you noted) I used a dremel on mine.

You can't use the 954 clip-ons, they are too low and will hit the fairing / tank. Because of how that front end fits our bike you will have to attach the clip-ons below the triple, so just to get close to stock height you will need clip-ons with about 3.5 inches of rise.

Do go to All Balls bearings, brake lines are up to you, you will have so much more brakes with the new setup that it isn't a needed thing, but firmer lines are always better.

The main thing that I missed that you can get right is to measure the distance from the steering head (frame) to the axle before removing the stock stuff so that you can recreate that same measurement with the new forks and have a decent starting point to adjust from. I winged it and ended up with my forks pushed down too far in my triples for my first ride.

lazn- thanks for the feedback- I've actually checked out your swap already and was planning on using it as a guide cause the pics are so well done. (and taken note to measure the head tube to axel as well)

Partial interest in the ss break lines is purely for cosmetic reasons.
