How about Supercharged??

Anyone seen a VFR with a supercharger or anyone here have one? Something that I thought would be awesome!

Toro1 is a member from VFRD who supercharged his VFR. Technically, it's toro-charged.

Check out the following thread:

There was a purple supercharged VTR at one time, but I'm not sure if was a real runner or not.

yep thats the one, thats just awesome!

I would love to boost the SH on a small turbo. It has low compression and is begging for some boost love.

Others have warned that they think the chassis and swingarm layout being bolted to the engine might not be able to handle the boost. This guy making 262whp doesn't seem to have any issues though. Not to say they couldn't be any though. 200whp is all I would ever need. Hell I'd be happy with 180s like a kid in a candy store :D.

Friend of mine does custom turbo fabricating as his own business. He recently did a Buell. Must be a fun machine to ride now!

As long as it spools up quick. Lag is a drag in corners.

Did you notice the location of the exhaust on the last video.

Syclone 07-11-2008 10:49 PM

A Buell with chain drive? must have converted to handle the extra power?

gboezio 07-12-2008 06:07 AM

I did all the maths to turbocharge my Hawk.
But it's hell hard to pile cash to waste like this :D
I had squared out most of the headaches.
But first, bring power to the garage, finish the garage, install doors, buy a TIG welder ($$$), a pallet of beer, all the stuff I need and find the time to work on my project...
It's way harder to start from a carbed bike than an already FI, but even a FI bike will need mods to it's fuel system to meet the extra demand of forced induction.

A supercharger could take it's power from an heavily modified stator cover, but I like the turbo solution better, the problem is to bring eficiently the rear pulses toward the front, without too much heat and velocity losses.
The turbo would ned to sit high or a oil return pump will be in order.
An intercooler would be almost necessary and would complicate the plumbing even more, not to mention air intake, and all the exhaust pipes nightmares, but I like trouble :D
This is why I need a good TIG welder because there is a lot of metal work involved to get there.
Then the wiring begins, EFI programming, tuning, road test, tuning, raod test...
But the result got to be awesome.
The good news is that you may be leaving the engine alone since the comp is pretty low and good to 8-10 PSI on super duper 94 octane IMO.

It might help keep the tailgaters off your ass, throwing flames like that.

Turbo bikes are a bad idea.

in the hands of the wrong person, sure.

otherwise, no way.

That's like saying bikes are a bad idea.
I was interested in building Lotus 7 replicas a few years ago and read about the Dax Rush. Something like 1100 lb car with a turbo Busa motor making 300 or so hp...been a while. Near F-1 car power to weight ratio. Paddle shifters and all kinds of cool shit. Put a Lotus 11 body on it for better aerodynamics and you've got something amazing! Almost a bike! Saw a Harley V-Rod turbo'd at a show one time, guy said he needs it to ride with the kids on rockets. Scares him every ride!

haknslash 07-12-2008 04:20 PM

You don't necessarily have to run an intercooler. Most turbo kits on bikes I've seen don't run them IIRC. You can run turbo for carbs as well. Of course you can't tune fuel mapping like FI but turbos and carbs go way back ;). Exhaust you can run a dump. No real need for a exhaust system since the turbo is basically the muffler at that point. Faster spool + sexy spool sounds :)

Yup that's why I would only go small. A T25 would satisfy me plenty ;)

180whp and 110ft lbs would be sweet on this bike!!

Peter you nailed it on the head with the statement almost a bike.
In corners when you need to power the bike (usually midway thru) the turbo is starting to spool, creating more power. You decide if this is a good idea bike leaned over and suddenly adding an extra 50 HP to the rear wheel.

gboezio 07-12-2008 07:41 PM

The power delivery may be brutal at WOT, but below that the turbo would not spool and get out of control, you 'll have to go heavy on the throttle to get there. Twist accordingly.
But an adaptation is needed to get used to that weird power curve.

VTRsurfer 07-12-2008 10:26 PM

I imagine many on the forum know this, but Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha all had a Turbo model (500 to 750cc) back in the early '80s.
The Kawi was the best, mainly because the Honda was too heavy, according to the mags.
I rode a Honda CX500 Turbo, but not in the twisties, very quick at that time but with a lot of lag. The 650 was even better. They all dumped their Turbo models by mid '80s.
It would be great for straight line riding. Just keep your weight forward.

VTRsurfer 07-12-2008 10:29 PM

The Kawi 750's turbo spun at a max of 100,000 rpm. Small turbo=less lag.

Stock internals of the SH are good for about ~130hp. Above that you'd have to track down a Moriwaki crank (hard to find and $$) etc.
