HARC-Pro Frame brace

1 Attachment(s)
This is my next project. I am having a brace made up and though I would check to see if anyone else might be interested, Still working out details but have things pretty much squared away.

This is a blast from the past bit and I would guess most have never seen one.
It fits between the lower sub-frame mounts.

I am very interested.

Have seen this before Hawk.

Are you looking to make more than one ? If you are I am interested .

Would save me the hassle !

xeris 03-31-2017 02:12 PM

Guesstimate on price?
I'm in if they're not stupid expensive

8541Hawk 04-01-2017 10:31 PM

Sorry for the slow reply..... haven't worked out price yet but it is a pretty simple bit once you work out the details.

There is also a bit of lag time with the whole project because I'm in Ca and the welder I am working with is in VT.

The method to this madness is that besides being a room mate from years ago, he builds mountain bike frames for a living. In fact he is even in the mountain bike hall of fame..... so he knows his tubing.....lol

I'll have more info soon as it looks like I just need a couple

kenmoore 04-02-2017 01:53 AM

if the price is right count me in !

Time isn't issue.

This is one of those mods I was getting around to.

skokievtr 04-03-2017 02:24 PM

+1 on In

Given pricing is reasonable...

VTR1000F 04-03-2017 04:34 PM

mikstr, what did this do for you? I think I've read Roger Ditchfield state this is not needed unless you're making 135 horses.

mikstr 04-03-2017 06:31 PM

I can't recall Roger saying that... in regards to your question, what it has done is firmed up the bike, helping it track with greater assurance and stability, for example when encountering bumps in the corners. Is it necessary? no. Can it hurt? no

8541Hawk 04-03-2017 06:44 PM

The easiest way to understand what this brace does is that it is similar to a fork brace but instead of making the fork legs work together it makes the frame sides work together.

It does depends on your riding style but it keeps the sub-frame from twisting the rear of the frame while cornering.

CrankenFine 04-03-2017 07:30 PM

May be interested, depending on price.

Hopefully the builder can drop ship direct from VT, to save shipping cross continent twice.

VTR1000F 04-03-2017 07:47 PM

I understand the concept, just wondered if mikstr noticed any difference when installed on his underpowered bike.

I found the thread I referred to. I remembered it wrong. Roger was referring to the frame ears and it was quoted in a thread about this brace.

https://www.superhawkforum.com/forum...e-brace-31353/

I'm about the last guy to worry if what I'm bolting on is necessary, so I'm in for one if not outrageously expensive.

8541Hawk 04-04-2017 12:25 PM

I do understand the waiting on the price point before making any commitment.....as when these came out they were close to $300...
Yeah I actually have been around these bikes that long.

In Sept, I will have owned my bike for 20yrs.....

I would like to ask what you guys think would be a fair price for something like this?

Also my comment about the link shared, it is stated that this brace is worthless. IMO the way that was written can give the wrong info.

Yes it is worthless if you have a fully braced frame. If not, it is a different story.

If you have braced your swingarm and noticed an improvement this is the next step as it tightens things up a little more. If you are going all out, no it won't replace bracing the frame but is a good option IMO, or I wouldn't bother having one made, for a milder build.

xeris 04-04-2017 01:02 PM

Not to insult anyone but I'm thinking more like $150 would be about right. If they were being sold for a profit 300 is probably where it should be but with that said $300 too rich for my pay grade. I do believe that you should get something for your trouble and the runaround that this is going to take. How much compensation will be your choice.

8541Hawk 04-04-2017 04:20 PM

I'm not insulted in anyway... I just didn't want anyone to freak out or anything...lol though I do think they will come in for less than that as we have done everything to keep the costs down.

So the design is a little simplified, which makes it a little heavier.....though if that bothers you buy some Ti bolts....lol Also it will be bare metal, so you can put the finish of your choice on there.

I should have a price tomorrow for either a run of 5 or 10..... so I'll have 4 or 9 extra and then go down the list in order to see who gets one.

This will be a one time thing as he has also said he has no interest in making anymore, just a favor for me as he has 100 bike frames to build right now.

Hangfly 04-05-2017 07:34 AM

Have him sign them as in limited edition run. (#1 of 10 etc). Future collector items from the master frame builder.

Fastguy59 04-05-2017 11:46 AM

I would be interested, once a price is established and a sample is photographed...

E.Marquez 04-06-2017 08:28 AM

I do think they work , and I know they help resist flex, as the frame was flexing enough to fracture the one I made from stainless steel tube.
I had about 4,000 miles on it, when i found a crack in the tube near the weld.
Removed it and never got around to making another..it is on the long list of things to get made.

Mike, what are you having yours made from?
Aluminum? Mild Steel? Chromoly? Stainless steel?
Tube or solid?
Clearly I used to thin of a cross section SS tube, and would like to make one from 7057 Al bar, but don't TIG Al yet.
.250 wall AL tube might work well and save some weight over bar.

Please post up the final product and cost as well as your observations in use.
Thanks

xeris 04-09-2017 06:48 PM

Hawk, just read your post in the zx10 thread. If that is going to be the approximate cost, count me in!

Billy16 04-11-2017 10:55 AM

Interested depending on price and how much it weighs.

VTR1000F 04-18-2017 03:36 PM

So did you ever get a final price and number available on this, Hawk?

8541Hawk 04-18-2017 06:57 PM

Right now the price is a bit higher than I had hoped, so trying to work on ways to bring it down a bit.

VTR1000F 04-18-2017 07:06 PM

Thanks for the update.

NHSH 04-19-2017 06:00 AM

I'm in whatever the cost, love that bike too much :-)

Kelevra 04-19-2017 10:41 AM

In with the same stips as everyone else. :-)

Fastguy59 05-17-2017 11:08 AM

8451Hawk, Any movement on your HARC-Pro replica frame braces? Color me curious...

VTR1000F 08-17-2017 03:56 PM

Did this ever happen? Did anyone get one? Was I too far down on the list? Anyone?

kenmoore 08-18-2017 01:01 AM

I am still interested !

mikstr 08-19-2017 08:17 AM

Would be nice if this project could take off as the brace does help tighten things up

of course, with all due respect to Mike, if you tire of waiting, do what I did... make your own! (which predates this project btw)

E.Marquez 08-19-2017 10:31 AM

Could make them from Cro-molly 4130 tubing and a steel or aluminum threaded insert, with aluminum spacers fairly easy (easy is relative, but as far as fabricating, machining and welding go it is not a complicated bit of fabrication. ) But the per item cost due to time when done on manual machines and such far exceeds what i think riders will pay.
